A classic Italian farce from the late 1800’s. But a fascinating story. Our main character is a plain, balding, getting on middle-aged guy who falls in love with a gymnastics teacher who lives in an apartment building that his uncle owns and that he helps run. Almost all the action and dialog takes place in the stairway of the apartment building, which Italo Calvino, who finds this a “gem of a book” in his introduction, says is symbolic of female anatomy. The story is a classic farce as this plai ...more

A fabulous little tale of unrequited love of a shy 'failed' priest for a larger than life gymnastics teacher. Very funny!

A little gem - a clerk falls in love with a gymnast - takes place in Turin at the turn of the 20th-century, written at that time. Very funny.
