There is no simple definition that takes in all the variations, all that can be done is to list those features of insects that distinguish them from other animals. This book has been designed to help the the non-specialist place an insect in its correct group and to provide the basic knowledge necessary for tackling the more detailed works. It is hoped that the specialist may also find this book of use in dealing with those orders with which he is less familiar.

Michael Chinery is an English naturalist.

He studied in Cambridge where he graduated in natural sciences and anthropology.

He edits Cecidology, the journal of the British Plant Gall Society.
