Conqueror of the World: The Life of Chingis (Genghis) Khan

This book is intended as a brief summary of the life of Genghis Khan. As such it is a very readable & easy to understand work. However it's clear that the book is merely touching the surface. The chapters are short & they cover vast amounts of data. This book will introduce you to the man but it will leave you hungry for more. Perhaps that is the greatest complimen ...more

The Writ of Khan"

Genghis Khan never came from a long line of kings and queens. Instead, he was the son of a tribal chieftain who was struggling to keep his head above water. The story of Genghis' ( his given name was Temujin) rise is a long, complicated one, full of battles both won and lost, flights to the forests and mountains of northern Mongolia, and revivals of fortune after strokes of pure luck. In fact, to me, the most amazing thing about Genghis Khan's story is that he actually survived.

This is half-history, half-novel. Or history told like a novel; with extracts from the original material - whole pages of speech from The Secret History, for example - and with picturesque chapter names such as 'Misery and Grandeur of the Nomads'; 'The Tears of Chinggis-Khan'; '"You Have Trampled Underfoot the Head of this Dead Man!"'; '"These Evil-Smelling Mongols"'; 'A Note of High Tragedy: Chinggis Khan and Jamuqa'. I quoted those to tempt you.

It's considered 'popular history'. Grousset has
