One of my favorite illustrated books- beloved in childhood and I still have it today. Captivating, rich colors decorate memorable characters in dimly lit scenes. Far from the cutesy Disneyfied dregs and Pixar pap that populate the racks of stores today. These are fabulous tales for a more mature young child.

This was my absolute favorite book when I was a child. The vibrantly colored drawings were wonderful, but the very first story had me hook line and sinker. The clever woodcutter's son challenged a mighty troll to an eating contest. The boy cheated by putting a burlap sack under his shirt and for ever spoon full of porridge he actually ate, 2 went into the sack. When the boy and the troll appeared to be stuffed at the same time, the boy merely took out his own knife and sliced his belly (A.K.A. porridge filled sack). The troll was amazed and asked if it hurt. The boy said no! Not at all! And thus talked the troll into gutting himself. I was so very impressed by how smart that boy was...... but I still am not sure it was all that appropriate since I was so young.

I love this book. I still have the original copy that i received in 1982. The illustrations are striking, and while the storytelling is your typical condensed tales without any subtle characterizations, i'm still giving it a 5. call it nostalgia.

I was a bit disappointed in this book because I had expected it to be a book on traditional fairy tales, but it was not. It is very nicely illustrated, however, in vibrant tones
