I’ve recently connected with Tecia - the author - as she was my grandmothers very good friend. Through her writing I sense parts of my grandmother and the type of stories or anecdotes she would tell me. It was nice to read. It is direct and also there are a couple of passages that I had to stop to read twice to re-enjoy the way they were written. I love being re-immersed in war and post war stories, a big part of me grew up with all of them too. It’s forgotten but so essential to why we are here, in Canada. I connect to the sense of wonder in Europes architecture and deeper history vs the stark harshness of Canadian winters and sense of the ability to hide here. In many ways, my grandfather hid here. He never returned. I wish now I’d have thought of asking him why. Anyways, she suggested I read this book. So I did. And I did not regret it. Interesting twist at the end. Time to find out why this is the book she suggested I read 💐❤️

In her astounding 1996 novella, Tecia Werbowski gifts readers with a classic study of psychological conflict. The stark image of a wall that cuts people off from one another is very telling, we discover, as we are taken back in time by the impassioned fictional heroine, Estera Sternschuss, the child of Polish lovers Klara and Jacek, to Eastern Europe, mid-WW2. Settings alternate from Montreal, where Estera is living at the story’s outset, to Poland and Czechoslovakia. A moving, historically resonant gem of a 1st-person narrative with a surprise ending. Thank you Tecia!
