I love reading books in an outstanding series, although I do hate the wait when a new installment is coming out. THIS new book was very, very much worth the wait. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the third and final volume in this masterful story.

The author begins with a recap of the first award-winning book: Eclipsed by Shadow. While The Golden Spark can definitely be read as a stand-alone story, it is far more beneficial for the reader to read them in order. In case you're new to One Book Shy, read

Sixteen-year-old Meagan Roberts returns as a doughty groom to a fierce Spaniard in this adventurous tale of equestrian excellence, the sequel to Into the Dark. The fierce Spaniard is no less than Henry Cortes, and the battlefield upon which he rides is filled with screaming Aztec warriors.

For a time it seems the would-be conquerors will themselves be conquered by hundreds of thousands of the Aztec spearmen, who are expert at fighting hand-to-hand. Even Cortes' superiority in weapons -- his men m

“The Golden Spark” is the second book in “The Legend of the Great Horse Trilogy”. Before we get into the meat of my review, I’ll give a bit of a teaser….it was terrific.

The beginning of the book finds us swaying precariously in the underbelly of a massive ship filled with horses. That scene was written so well that I actually had a dream about it.

It was fascinating to learn so much about the Cortés invasion on the

Picking up where book one left off, we find Meagan and her magical horse, Promise, barely escaping being executed for witchcraft in 1616 Western Europe. Promise takes her back in time, this time landing on a ship, but not just any ship. They land on the Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortés’s ship in the year 1519 where Meagan becomes in charge of taking care of the captain’s horse. Then, Promise takes her to the court of Louis XIV of France, the Sun King, where she poses as a stable-hand. Last, th ...more

This is the story of 16 year old Meagan Roberts and her adventures as she follows the Great Horse through time. The Golden Spark takes us from Mexico in 1519 to France in 1666 and finally to England in 1816. In each setting, Megan lives and works closely with horses, always trying to find the Great Horse so that one day she can return home. This book does an excellent job of teaching the reader about how horses were trained, treated, and what they were used for in each of the historical time per ...more

Well written and knowledgable, the story leaps forward in history as Meaghan is led by the Great Horse. A legend that has been proven true, the Great Horse is something like an angel or spirit that had many manifestations throughout history and is revisiting these with Meaghan. This book covers three periods primarily, the Spanish conquest of the New World, the decadence of Louis XIV's reign, and the traditions of the 1800s. The facts about horses are very accurate and interesting, as well as th ...more

Not having read the first book, I was leary about reading the second and not being able to "get in" to the story. Honestly I would love to read the first only because it is the beginning. Even though this was not a stand alone novel I had no problem enjoying and following the story of 16 year old Meagan's adventures through time and historic events. If you like horses in any way then read this series. I not only enjoyed the story but liked the horse facts throught out. I can not wait to read the ...more

I received this book in exchange for an honest review
I only seem to read positive reviews about this book, but I don't feel as positive. This is a lovely book to read, but while reading I didn't feel the urge to keep reading. This is probably due to the writing style, because the story is beautiful.

I really was caught up in Book II of the Legend of the Great Horse. One chapter after another led Meagan through adventures in some of my favorite historical times from Medieval Europe to just before Victorian England.
