تہذیبی نرگسیت کا مطلب خود پسندی،انانیت اور اپنے نظریات کو اٹل اور کامل سمجھنا اور پھر ان کے مطابق جذباتی اور سماجی طور پر خود کو فعال بنانا ہے۔
نرگسیت کا ایک پہلو صحت مند بھی ہے جو کہ خود نگری اور خود شناسی ہے کہ جن میں اپنی خامیوں اور سماجی برائیوں کو زیر غور لایا جاتا ہے۔اس حالت میں انسان یا معاشرہ مثبت تبدیلی کی طرف کوشش کرتا ہے جبکہ پہلی صورت میں سماج میں اردگرد کے انسانوں سے کوئی سروکار نہیں رکھا جاتا اور نہ ہی دوسری تہذیبوں اور مذاہب کا احترام کیا جاتا ہے۔
زیر نظر کتاب اسی منفی نرگسیت پر لکھی گئی ہے اور بتایا گیا ہے کہ عموماً پاکستانی عوام اور خصوصاً مسلمانوں کا المیہ یہ ہے کہ ان کو اپنے روایات، اسلامی اور مہذب لگتے ہیں لیکن دوسرے مذاہب اور ان کے پیروکاروں کو باطل اور گمراہ تصور کرتے ہیں۔
کہتے ہیں کہ جب قومیت کی بات ہوتی ہے تو ہم اپنے آپ کو اور اپنے آباواجداد کو بڑھا چڑھا کر پیش کرتے ہیں اور خود کو تاریخی طور پر دوسرے اقوام سے برتر تصور کرتے ہیں لیکن اگر یہی اقوام عالم مسلمانوں کو زیر کر کے اپنے مفاد اور مسلمانوں کی کوتاہیوں کا ازالہ کرنے لگ جائے تو ہم ان کے خلاف جہاد اور دوسری عوامی تحریکیں شروع کردیتے ہیں اور اپنی نسلوں کو ان کے خلاف بڑکا کر اور اپنی غلطیوں پر پردہ ڈال کر سیاسی اور مذہبی جذبات سے ان کی شعوری تشکیل کرتے ہیں۔
کتاب اسلامی نقطہ نظر سے نرگسیت پر روشنی ڈال کر حقیقت سے پردہ اٹھانے کی ایک عمدہ کاوش ہے۔

Although still relevant to certain extent in terms of understanding narcissism of the cultural variety but this book is more relevant had I read it in 2008-2014 timeframe. In Pakistani context, I think our narcissism is on a relative decline due to the events of the past 10 years both locally and internationally however, a prime example these days of the same type of narcissism is now emerging in the neighbouring india with the rise of hindutva politics and the successes of the past few years. The biggest problem with this narcissism is that nations forget to learn from their mistakes and keep on repeating them

Mobarak Haider deserves great applause for this book. Really an inspiring book to understand religious monarchy in the Islamic world. A fascinating book discussing the issue of civilization narcissism and how it affects the progress of groups of peoples, nations & states. The author has discussed in detail the civilization narcissism found in Muslims particularly in South Asia & Afghanistan. And sadly there are no efforts made to cure the disease eating the entire society.

very enlightening booklet. It mentions why Muslims in particular are lagging behind in all fields of life and it also xrays claims of the elixir by Qutab, Moudidi, and likewise

reading this book it seemed to me that this book is written by two separate authors. the part discussing Muslim history and their cultural narcissism was nicely handled but when it came to militancy in Pakistan it just happened to me that i am reading a common man's views on this issue. the writer again and again insisted and tried to prove this ongoing militancy as "resistance of northern tribals against invader ".the irony was he himself denied his very arguments in some parts of the book. at one place he said that tribals always tried to stick to their strict traditions and another place the same writer says that when Afghanistan and Pakistan were under their modernization and development these tribals neither complained or tried any resistance.
another example is a sentence which can reflect writers confusion about understanding this process , that is "لہذا جہاں یہ درست ہے کہ قبائلی معاشرہ کی اجتمائی آمریت تبدیلی اور آمیزش کو روکتی ہے وہاں یہ بھی سچ ہے کہ قبائلی معاشرے جدید تہذیب کا حصہ بنے ہیں اور بن سکتے ہیں . اور جدید دنیا سے ان کی آمیزش نہ صرف تاریخ کا حصّہ ہے نلکہ جدید وقتوں میں ہو رہی ہے "
anyhow the book was not that bad. as i said earlier half of its content was very interesting and addressed in a very easy way .
