Little Witch finds herself left behind on Halloween night in this first of a series of easy-readers to chronicle her adventures, having been "too good" to enjoy a night flight with Mother Witch, Grouchy Witch, and Nasty Witch. But when three trick-or-treaters come knocking at her door, and Little Witch has no candy to give them, she ends up taking, not one, but three flights, and making some new friends in the process.
With simple text - Little Witch's Big Night is part of Random House's Step Into Reading series, third level ("Reading On Your Own," Grades 1-3) - and cute illustrations, this little book would make an ideal introduction to Halloween literature for the newly independent reader. There are a number of sequels - Happy Birthday, Little Witch , Little Witch's Bad Dream , etc. - so children who enjoy the story and like the character will be able to proceed accordingly.

This Step-into-Reading book from the early 1980s is a fine choice for beginning readers looking for something Halloween-y to read. The little witch is punished for being "too good" and has to stay home while the other (wicked) witches go out--but she ends up giving an unforgettable Halloween experience to some trick-or-treating kids when she takes them for magical rides on her broomstick. I like the concept and the illustrations are cute, but overall I wasn't really captivated by the story and it isn't one of my favorite Halloween titles though I'm glad I read it and I would recommend it to beginning readers.

This fun little early reader book provides a fun story for the Halloween season for your new little reader. Unfortunately, my son is just a little too early on his reading journey to be able to read this book this year. But, we look forward to picking it up again next year.

This book was originally my niece's book. She passed it to my son with a number of books that she loved but had outgrown. This book is a step into reading book published by Random House. My son would read this book to during the Holiday season.
It is a cute little story that appeals to most children.

Cora loves the Little Witch series (there are about 4 books), they are a step into chapter books level. The other kids and I like them too! Pretty cute.

I remembered the Little Witch books from my childhood and had to get them for my own kids before Halloween this year. Little Witch is punished by Mother Witch for being too good, so she has to stay home on Halloween night and miss the big flight. But Little Witch is in for a surprise when three trick or treaters knock at her door. Little Witch finds some fun, and some new friends too. Perfect for young elementary children, this is a step into reading book so it can be used as a story time read aloud or as an independent reading for early readers. It has just the right touches of humor, friendship, and a little spookiness for Halloween time. It’s definitely not a scary story, it’s mostly silly. The illustrations, done by Marc Brown and cute and endearing, and I greatly prefer them over the illustrations in the later Little Witch books, which just don’t hit the nostalgia factor for me.

This story sort of reminds me of a Cinderella plot, in which Little Witch gets punished by her Mother Witch and is forced to stay at home during Halloween, while Mother Witch goes out with her friends. However, Little Witch makes the best of her night with three new-found friends, and goes on a flying adventure. I liked that Little Witch was able to turn a bad situation into a good situation, and make some great friends while she was at it. The literature in this book was very easy to read, and I liked that the illustrations were cartoon-like and very colorful.

Another favorite of mine as a child. I remember that this one came with an audio cassette with it and I'd play it again and again. I knew this book long before I was a fan of the Arthur series, so it's cool to see Marc Brown illustrate something else and now piece together his distinct style. While I enjoyed this book as a kid, there really isn't a lot to it, which made me feel let down. I guess as an adult I've lost some of its magic. My rating - 3/5

March 6, 2022I need help! I read this book as a child and it was a part of a compilation book with many other stories. At some point I got seperated from it and I would love to find it again. Unfortunately, Little Witches Big Night is the only story from the book I remember. I also remember it was a hardback cover. This was around 1996-2002

I enjoyed this book because I like flying. I did not like this book because I did not like the part when little witch's mom got mad so she didn't get to go trick-or-treating.

I really enjoy this story; it is a really good book to read during Halloween. I think that it is a really good Halloween book because it is not like any other Halloween book written. I found it amusing when little witch got in trouble for being too good. She made her bed so mother witch got mad, then mother witch look under little witch’s bed and saw that there was no cob webs so got even madder. As a punishment for being so good, mother witch says that the little witch can not go riding on her broomstick with the other witches. Little witch is very sad that she can not go riding on her broomstick but then, with a pleasant change of events she ends up having a lot of fun. She finds three trick or treaters and since she does not have any candy she offers them each a ride on her broomstick. They all have so much fun, it was very amusing to read and see the adventures and things that they see while riding on the broomstick. It is an interesting twist because little witch has to say some words to make the broom stick fly and to do certain tricks. At first the little witch had such a fun time she was going to try and be good all year so that she could stay home next Halloween but then mother witch says that it wasn’t the same without her and that she missed her so then little witch was going to decide to not be so good. It is a good lesson on mother’s and daughters spending time together.

Are you seeing a pattern in my book reviews? I was indeed a very focused child when it came to reading Halloween-themed stories. Go me.
This book is again a strong one for introducing young readers to reading by themselves. Little Witch has a hard time being a witch because she tends to do good things, like cleaning her room and being nice to people. As punishment, her mother forces her to stay home one Halloween night instead of joining in with the group of witches. Both Little Witch and her mother learn something that night and it's a successful one for several reasons. I found it very fun to reread, but like most level "learn to read" books, it probably won't be as much fun for kids once they've mastered the language and moved on, though they might enjoy it later in life.

I love this book. It was my daughter's favorite for a while when she was 4, so I've read it many times. I never (thankfully) got tired of this fanciful little tale of a young witch's first Halloween. Little Witch's Big Night has lovely pictures & is a good bridge from being read to into reading independently.

Even though it deals with Halloween and you might not be able to read it to a class, it still had some really cute values. Little was being too good, so her punishment was to stay home on halloween. However, 3 trick or treaters came to the door and she decided to give them all a broomstick ride. During these rides, she made a few friends as well.

A great book for beginning readers. The illustrations are by charming and the story is as well. It should definitely capture their imagination. Besides what child doesn't want to read book where the mother encourages the child to be naughty and messy.

Because she's been good again, Little Witch's punishment is to stay home. But along come some trick-or-treaters whom she befriends and gives ride on her broomstick.

My favorite book when I was little, & the first one I could read all the way through by myself.

Little Witch can't go out with her family on Halloween night because she is being punished for being too good. While her family is gone, she gives some trick-or-treaters rides on her broom.

Great book for early readers. It introduced a lot of new vocabulary to my son but the time motivator (before Halloween!) helped him to push on and finish.

What a fun book about a witch being and wanting to be good!!! Going to look for more in this series.
