Stan and Jan Berenstain (often called The Berenstains) were American writers and illustrators best known for creating the children's book series the Berenstain Bears. Their son Mike Berenstain joined them as a creative team in the late 1980s.

Um... I'm not sure this book had a very good moral? It appeared to be "never try to help anyone, even if they appear to be in immediate danger, because you'll probably mess it up and they'll get mad". Perhaps "Ask before helping" would have been appropriate, but it certainly wasn't ever mentioned in the book, so I'm guessing the average preschooler would not get that out of it.

Also the other moral is that Papa Bear is incompetent. Hmm.

I've heard that people feel the bears are too preachy, but this seemed kind of the opposite actually. Every Bear for itself! Someone should call social services on Papa Bear because he is clearly not a competent guardian of his children! Why did cousin Ned's parents leave him alone with Papa Bear??

It's got a good message, but the quality of story is just too ridiculous for my taste.

I have always loved The Berenstain Bears book. They are always appealing to the eye and have a great moral to the story. I like how this book incorporated their faith into the story as well as teaching the little bears to never give up. I would recommend this book to a young reader when working in a christian school. I would only recommend it then because it does talk about God and use biblical references.

I loved the original series as a kid and was excited when I found out that the series continued so I can read them to my kid. But the Mike Berenstain ones have been huge disappointments, especially the heavy handed nature of the Living Lights series.
