Cameron Judd (AKA: Tobias Cole) is a bestselling author of over forty historical and Western novels, including The Canebrake Men and Crockett of Tennessee. A former award-winning journalist, he continues to write his acclaimed column “Clips to Keep” and lives with his family in Greene County, Tennessee.
Tudor Cochran and his wife own an inn on the mountain pass heading to Snow Sky mining town, and his wife, being unsettled since the departure of a stranger and his son three days prior, convinces Tudor to take after them to make sure the boy is safe. The visitor was close-mouthed and evasively abrupt while the boy had a look of worry about him. Tudor gets his friend Frogg to take up the trail with him in pursuit of the two.
The "Snow Sky" (1990) mining town has its own problems when Tudor and Frogg arrive, with a town marshall not really up for the challenge, a couple local thieves up to no good, and an underhanded swindler posing as a preacher. Poor Frogg finds himself arrested for assault and murder after his first night in town and we know he didn't do it.
Verdict: "Snow Sky" has some familiar tropes and backstories for some of the characters, but it actually comes off well with an old-fashioned mystery and trail of understanding for the good guys, a boss villain easy to root against, a dangerous pursuit, and some good twists and turns.
