Ambos envueltos e

I think that all those books about a love that completes just at the end of story could be either boring or fascinating.
I like this better than ''Pride and prejudice'' or ''Wuthering Heights''. I don't know why but the story was more captivating.
The contrast between the poor and the rich, Octave and Armance makes the story interesting.
At the beginning, Armance was a girl that didn't care about what others say but when it came to a marriage with Octave, she refused saying that she can't do that

Translated by C.K. Scott-Moncrieff, introduction by Bergen Evans.

This is a rather unsatisfying little novel of French manners concerning a young man and a young woman who love each other madly but will not think of marrying, for their own reasons, and thus remain basically estranged. According to Evans, Stendhal indicated in a letter (but not in the book) that Octave, the noble hero, is meant to be impotent: this is his "fatal secret." Because this is never mentioned in the story (or even hinted

Armance was Stendhal's first novel; although not nearly so well-written or interesting as Le Rouge et le Noir, it already foreshadows Stendhal's style in the way it combines a romantic plot with a basically realist (though not quite realistic) social analysis. Unlike the later novel, however, it simply juxtaposes the two rather than truly integrating them. The plot concerns a wealthy French nobleman, Octave vicomte de Malivert, and a "poor" Russian noblewoman named Armance de Zohiloff; they fall ...more

Normalde bir kitabın günlerce elimde can çekişmesini sevmem.

This is Stendhal's highly misunderstood first novel. The supposed "pretext" of the novel is to present a protagonist, Octave, in love with (but unaware of his own feelings) his cousin, Armance, but suffering from a secret curse, never revealed in the text (hint: impotence). In 1827, such things are not spoken of, but previously, recent unpublished by highly circulated (among the upper classes) novels depicted similar "secret" problems. However, Stendhal basically piggybacks on this peculiar tren ...more

Enjoyed the rather dramatic choice of ink for Octave's letter, and Bonnivet's elliptic coffee stain and bookbinding manipulations of Soubirane.

I enjoyed the book, even with all the tormented happenings between the two lovers. I even grew very much fond of them. In the seccond half of the book, I became almost obsessed with their love story as well as upset with the almost persistent love bad-luck and often misunderstandings appreciating in the same time that bad-luck in the XIX th century was more romantic than fulfilled passionate love stories. All in all, I hated the ending. He should have not killed Octave. I am not even accepting h ...more

Armance reads as if Stendhal wrote it on the fly, with a notion for a story about a romance thwarted by the lovers themselves, but without any concern for plot. When he needs a complication, something to prevent his lovers from coming together, he just throws in a character with some nefarious motive. In addition, a good part of the writing is taken up with allusions to contemporary politics, but with such little detail that it is impossible to understand or care about what is being fought over ...more

Henri-Marie Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal , was a 19th-century French writer. Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839).
