Sedotto dalla pubblicità e da potenti modelli televisivi, l'individuo è solo di fronte al mondo globale. In teoria può collegarsi sempre e dovunque con tutti. In pratica, i suoi contatti sono momentanei, sempre reversibili e mai duraturi. Zygmunt Bauman è professore emerito di Sociologia nelle Università di Leeds e Varsavia e uno dei sociologi più conosciuti a livello internazionale.

Zygmunt Bauman was a world-renowned Polish sociologist and philosopher, and Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds. He was one of the world's most eminent social theorists, writing on issues as diverse as modernity and the Holocaust, postmodern consumerism and liquid modernity and one of the creators of the concept of “postmodernism”.

Kitabın Zygmunt Bauman'ın sosyolojisini okumadaki lezzetini bir yana bırakırsak oldukça kapsamlı şekilde kendi kendini tutsak eden toplumun dinamiklerine değiniyor diyebilirim. Küresel ve yaşam politikaları başlığı ile iki ana çerçevede işliyor konuyu. Gittikçe zorlaşan idare çerçevesinde toplum kendisini türlü belirsizliklere, küresel politikaların değişen çarklarına, artık bir avatar haline gelen büyük biradere ve dolu bir dünyada yaşamak zorunda kalan sığınmacılara kadar birçok konuya değiniyor. Yargısız, eşitlikçi, fırsatçılıktan uzak, hedonist, kamusala karşı özeli savunan, seyircilikten oyunculuğa evrilen ve ütopyalara artık inanmayan ve bugünü kutsayan bireyin de tüm bu karmaşanın dönüşümünde birincil rol oynayacağına değiniyor. Kendimizce oluşturduğumuz ve hapsettiğimiz her bir kuşatılmışlık hissinin çözümünün mağduru değil etken rolünü oynayan kişisi olmamız üzerine duruyor.

Beklentimin çok üzerinde bir kitap, tekrar okunulası. Dünya birkaç yüzyıl önce böyle bir yer değildi, kapitalizm sonrasında tüketim canavarı haline geldik. Yazar birçok kaynaktan yaptığı alıntıları kendi bilgisi ile harmanlayarak bize bizi akademik bir dille anlatıyor. Umarım ülkemizden de böyle sosyologlar yetişir bir gün.

Notarelle da bordo della mia goletta... ...dunque l'individuo nel mercatismo esasperato, del turbo-capitalismo � lacerato nei suoi legami sociali che da stabili e permanenti diventano labili e transitori. Societ� liquida come l'oceano, l'oceano di possibilit� e promesse � un oceano che ti sbatacchia sugli scogli del realismo e come sempre per navigarci sopra occorre un natante decente e perizia marinara. Il concetto pu� servire per evitare aspettative improbabili dalla societ� e quindi investire nelle speranze sbagliate. Ricordiamo che un altro insigne studioso, il LoRusso defin� incontrovertibilmente il destino ultimo la teleologia, dello speranzoso. Con buona pace dei Zygmunt Lovers, ricordiamo qualcosina d'altro: la prosa � immonda. Spesso peggiore delle parodie di McKinsey o della Arthur Andersen buonanima che si trovano in rete. (ah, non sono vere parodie... scrivevano proprio cos�: "ho utilizzato un utensile multiacuito per processare una risorsa amidacea" al posto di presi la forchetta per mangiare le patate) l'immonditia verbis seve a obnubilare (come d'uso) un concetto necessario per corroborare le sue tesi: il mondo solido con famiglia fabbrica stato era meglio. Migliaia di romanzi con oggetto i tormenti inflitti in famiglia, l'alienazione fordista e almeno un paio di guerre mondiali e rivoluzioni col turbo nazionalismo e il capitalismo coloniale come propellente fanno proprio pensare che il mondo rigido era meglio. Per qualcuno. Ho la presunzione folle e assoluta e il fegato di spiegarvi da dove vengono tutti questi lai e bai. Fin quando gli oneri della modernizzazione gravavano sul proletariato (1700, 1800) poi sulle masse (fine '800 prima met� del '900) poi sui ceti subordinati (fino al 1990), la modernizzazione era una cosa buona con dei problemi correggibili. Oggi che morde le chiappe anche "un po' pi� su" nella classe media e nei pensatoi � diventata "un mostro ingovernabile". No, in fondo � cambiata solo un po'. L'unica differenza � che adesso fa paura anche a gente che PRIMA, della modernizzazione prendeva solo il meglio. Volete capire un po' del mondo? Leggete venti romanzi per ogni saggio sociologico. Nel dubbio venticinque o trenta. Sulla mia goletta, il sociologo � a pulire permanentemente il ponte (con la brusca) e lo psicologo aiuta il cuoco (cinese ovviamente) in cucina. Per piet� non rivelo l'occupazione dell'unico politologo che ho imbarcato.

... so far... fascinating chapter on the morality of bystanding and the effect of globalisation making us all [in the 'West'] into constant bystanders to great suffering. We are hyper aware of human misery in distant and near places and yet have become less and less active in struggling to stop suffering in real time... we tweet... we donate... etc.

Now I'm back at the beginning of the book reading about the development of the nation state and nationalism and the recent breaking of capitalism from the nation state control into deregulated hyper-capitalism in a globalised world... sad sad stuff... I'm hoping Bauman has some hope at the end

A bit dense and fairly academic. Mr. Bauman is an endless fountain of creatively phrased insights into the nature and destiny of man and our societies. This book will leave you different than you were when you picked it up and you won't want to put it down until it is done.

Read for Uni - Bauman was a truly inspirational philosopher and sociologist for anyone who is interested in the problems of capitalism, mass consumerism and globalisation, and his knowledge and theories of postmodern consumerism are impressive, to say the least.

However, I've always found his books to be quite dry as they often read like a typical academic textbook, and sadly, Society Under Siege was no different. It's dense and difficult to get through in places, though it did offer a lot of useful insight for an essay on postmodern consumerism that I was working on. Not a book that I'd recommend for beginners to the subject, but if you've got a general grasp of the main ideas already, it's a handy 'next level up' for your knowledge on the matter.
