i just read a book by Mike Dash called Satan's Circus. It was a great , well researched account of corruption at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century in New York City. A large part of the book was about the murder of Herman Rosenthal. Lieutenant Charles Becker of the NYC police was convicted and executed for the crime. In Dash's book he recommended this book as a more detailed account of that affair. Well, He was right. Becker was railroaded. Yeah..he was a bad, corrupt, strong arming cop, but he didn't do the crime he was convicted of. NYC politics of the time mandated his execution. The prosecutor saw it as a political stepping stone and he used it to become Governor of New York State. Sad story. I wound up feeling very sorry for a guy who otherwise was not someone I would have admired.
