Everyone in the family has a lot to learn when the seriously ill baby Pearl comes home. Even though taking care of his sister is difficult, Jacob wants to help her in any way he can. In fact, he turns out to the one who is best at soothing little Pearl. He knows how to stroke her head and sing to her more softly than anyone. The big brother wants to take Pearl with him to all the important events at school. "I don't mind if the other children have never seen a baby like Pearl. I can explain to them what she's like," Jacob says. The entire family, including Pearl, indulges in the warmth and scents of summer.
Pearl is at home now, and Jakob is very happy about it. Soon he starts school and he wants everybody to meet his sister. I like how Jakob behaved with his sister, taking care of her, singing to her and incluying her in all the activities in his life. He even shared his icecream with her. He is a great big brother. This book could help big brothers to understand that having a sister or a brother is just great and they can help taking care of them. Tuula's books have deep yet achievable messages for young readers about compassion, caring for others and trying to understand where others come from.
The drawings are also very lovely and really add to the story, making the experience of reading with children a fun and educational experience.
This is a lovely story about a brother coming to terms with not only another child in his house but also that the newbie has medical needs that eclipse his own. The themse of sibling love, disability awareness, and inclusion are handled well and with respect.
Wonderful picture book story about an older sibling that will have a younger sibling with challenges. It helps to show how the older sibling is going to adjust and make changes so that they can help with their younger sibling who has these challenges. Family should read this together and have some discussions about compassion and empathy. Wonderful pictures help tell the story. Good read.
