The monster that once ruled the metal world has a name. It called itself....Metallica! Yes, they are still around and putting on shows, selling out venues whilst traveling the world to perform for thousands on an almost nightly basis. Somehow it is just not the same.
I ask myself if I still love the band and its music once in awhile. They started losing me in between the Black album and Load. For me, it is the first four albums - the blood and guts of early to mid '80's Metallica thrash metal- was and where their success and loyal following originated and built upon. However, it was the fifth full length release from the band, a self-titled, black album that generated new fans, while losing some older loyalist fans.
Here's where the rival discrepancy arose with the die hard fans and the new legion of fans. The loyalists argued that they sold out. The fresh faces had never heard anything so bad ass in music before. The new fans, some whose first favorite metal band was Metallica, ate this shit up! They brought in Producer, Bob Rock (all respect to Bob Rock and what he's contributed to Canadian music and music in general) and things sky-rocketed for Metallica! I think they broke even. Lose some fans and gain just as many and more.
I have no problem with this album at all and played it religiously for quite a few years. You couldn't walk down the street without hearing a song from someone's vehicle as they sped past you, with their stereo at near full volume! It was a great time in my life and for people my age. It seemed that a huge percentage of music freaks were digging the heavier music in the late '80's and into the '90's.
This book tells of all the goings on and what they did to bring them to this spot on top of the world, with very little, to no assistance from media. There came a point in time where the media could no longer shrug off "that screaming in the microphone shit", and looked for the next pop music icon to force feed it's radio listener's and video watcher's. This time though, it was anything but "Pop Music"!
Metallica was the next big thing. You could not deny this. It's a great story people, and there are some amazing photos, as well as full page pictures of ones never before seen. However, the climb before the fall is a hell of a lot quicker.
The name Metallica will ALWAYS sell out venues, halls and large outdoor stadiums! At least for a few more years I believe. It isn't the guys behind the band name selling out those seats. Believe me, fans world over are finding out themselves when they see them perform live. Obviously they still rock live, but it is a distant memory of when they truly were the monster who were also known as, "Alcoholica"! Those were the best years of the band in my opinion. Personally, I liked them better that way when James had more raucous stage banter and threw loud obscenities to the crowd in fun and he'd salute us all with, "Cheers fucker's!", holding his drink high in salute to us!

Great trip back in time to a place I hold many memories. Always, I will be a Metallica fan, regardless of my first review. I stand by those words. If it hadn't been for Metallica breaking metal barriers, there would not be bands such as Lamb Of God, Gojira, Amon Amarth and hundreds of others. Then again, by the same right, if it were not for bands like Black Sabbath and those among The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, there may have never been a Metallica!

I got this book from my sister, back in eh... 1994, I reckon. Not sure anymore. Anyway, at the time I was a massive Metallica fan, they were my Metal gods, so to speak. And so it was interesting to read about their career until the early 1990s. Yes, this book came out a few years before the band changed their image and style that lead to Load and Reload.
The book has glossy pages, lots of very beautiful photos and well-written stories. Recommended for any 'tallica fan, without question!

For die hard fans only. In depth details of the early years, the '80's era Metallica. The best years in my opinion. Lots of details about Cliff who was always a favorite - being a bass player myself. Also some great Mustaine era highlights as well. Hit the Liiiiiiights!!!!!!

Read this book when it came out - 15 years ago - I know I loved it at the time - not sure what I'd think of it now though.
