Getting Permission: How to License and Clear Copyrighted Materials Online and Off

Rate this book
Whether creating a web site, an anthology, or materials for a class, artists and educators of every stripe need to copy right. No, this doesn't mean pulling an all-nighter at Copy Hut. People who plan to use any copyrighted material for their own purposes need to get permission first from the owners of that work. If they don't, they could find themselves face to face with a lawsuit. Getting Permission , written by intellectual property expert Attorney Rich Stim, tackles the permissions process head on, explaining when authorization for the use of copyrighted materials is needed. It shines the light on who to ask for permission, as well as when--and how much--to expect to pay for permission. Comprehensive and easy to read, the book * the permissions process--including authorization to use text, photographs, artwork and music * the public domain * copyright research * fair use * academic permissions * the elements of a license and merchandise agreement * the use of a trademark or fictional character * and much more. This cutting-edge book, the only one on the market to cover web site permission, includes agreements for acquiring authorization to use text, photographs, artwork and music. It also provides information for web site owners, such as hyper-linking agreements and Internet research suggestions. A must for the new millennium, Getting Permission will help readers obtain rights, permissions and clearance--and stay out of legal hot water. All agreements included as tear-outs and on disk.

This 3rd edition was an excellent reference book on getting permission to use copyrighted content. Currently using the 6th edition and will update to the 8th edition shortly to keep up with the latest information.

Just reading the first twenty pages of this book already tells me that this is a book I will need on my shelf! I am taking a few short notes though and learning along the way. However, I am familiar with some things when I took a course over 10 yrs ago in masters program concerning copyrights and IP laws from a J.D./doctoral in library science professor. I hope to learn more along the way...period! No excuse for ignorance in the literary field, ever-growing and changing, but we need to be up on the business side not just researching for a writing project which is a plus too.

Keeps it simple! Great resource for musicians, writers, authors, and other entertainers who need to keep their IP material protected, get permissions, etc. Leisure read, 2014.

I really like this book. I have not read it from cover to cover yet but I have read many of the chapters that I personally need more information on. I found the book to be well written and I like the fact that they put real life examples into each section so that you can better understand the law. The book also has forms and document that may be helpful. I will keep this book close at hand and will refer to it whenever I need more information. If Nolo’s other books are as good as this one, I may have to start a little reference library!

I read this one for work. It's not a fascination book, but it's definitely thorough. I think I probably need to have this one on my shelf to return to when I need it.
