Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He is often credited as the "Father of Anime", and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during his formative years. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the God of Manga."

Where does one even start with this great series of manga stories? Osamu Tezuka first of all is sort of a combination of Walt Disney (especially in the fame and icon department) and HP Lovecraft. He's an incredible story teller and I also love his ink man ship. He's an incredible illustrator - one of the greats. If you read more than three or four of his works or series one cannot say he's not a genius. He's truly a great figure in the cartoon arts - beyond west or East - he is simply is.
Saying that, Astro Boy is a remarkable set of narratives about a boy robot who was left for junk by his adoptive father who invented him after his own son died in an accident. He wanted to give his son a new life as an AI, but then realized that it is only a robot. How sad is that? But Astro Boy proves that he has his own identity -and becomes a super hero. It's an incredible story on many levels. And it really deals with death on a realistic level. Very very moving series. Start off with volume 1 (reviewed here somewhere on my list of goodies) but do dwell into this great world made up by a true genius.

August 6, 2025I can honestly say that I have no idea how the heck this book was the manga that ‘started’ the shounen manga or inspired manga artists with their successful shounen series such as Dragon Ball. This manga is just kind of out there that I have absolutely no idea how I was going to rate this.
First off, this manga was made in the50’s so the art and the story really has an old fashion type story structure that we’ve seen in old comics before. Especially in the sci-fi and the action genre. The hero lives life normally (or sometimes discovers new powers about himself). A villain appears and causes chaos.
There’s nothing much to say about this book except for the fact that some of the scenes in this manga don’t make any sense and just pop out of nowhere. For example, in the beginning of the manga there is this young boy driving a car. Mind you that this kid is no older than 12 years old and yet he recklessly drives the car and ends up getting into an accident. There’s also the police cars that are shaped like dog heads and there are some sort of diamonds on the moon (or some sort of crystals with an abandoned city, I can’t remember).
The plot is just series of events that happen to our protagonist, Astro Boy and they are kind of boring and lame. They’re predictable and the villains are not really that interesting and can sometimes be kind of stupid. Astro Boy is the only thing about this manga I actually enjoyed. He’s nice, wants to do the right thing, stands up for his friends and is basically your typical superhero. He’s not that interesting or complex but they do give him a good backstory that makes you feel sympathy for him.
If you like the story of robots coexisting with human then this’ll be a cute manga to check out. Just keep in mind that it was made in the 50’s so the plot and the characters are kind of old fashioned and not that complex.

1. Balon-Balon Setan
Atom boy difitnah...Ada yang menerbangkan balon berbentuk Atom, dan balon-balon itu menjatuhkan bom. Akibatnya orang-orang takut bila Atom mendekat. Siapa yang mau menfitnah Atom? Apa yang harus Atom lakukan untuk mengatasi hal ini?
2. Akhir Bumi
Kesalahpahaman bisa merusak suatu persahabatan dan maksud baik...
3. Robot Penjahat
Cerita singkat. Ada penjahat yang mau balas dendam ceritanya, dan dia menciptakan sebuah robot yang menjiplak kekuatan Atom dan bertenaga 2 kali lipat dari Atom. Namun yang asli selalu lebih baik dari tiruannya...
4. Robot Pembohong
Robot kan nda boleh berbohong, namun bagaimana bila menciptakan robot untuk menemani orang sakit yang diperkirakan sebentar lagi meninggal? Tetap robotnya harus nda boleh bohong? bisa syok pasiennya kalo dibilangin umurnya nda lama lagi..huehehehe
5. Pencurian Otak
Ada anak yang cemburu dan iri hati karena kalah pintar dengan Atom, dan mengadu sama ibunya. Si ibu memutuskan otak Atom harus dicuri. Masalah baru timbul saat sang anak diculik, dan hanya Atom yang bisa membebaskannya. Bagaimana kelanjutan cerita ini ?
6. Mesin Waktu
Mengungkapkan kejadian sebenarnya mengenai Dokter Tenba, Tobio, dan Atom.
7. Pencurian Tubuh Astro Boy
Ada seorang penipu yang menginginkan badan Atom, demi bisa mencuri harta karun. Dia menyamar sebagai dokter. Oh, di sini diperlihatkan Atom remaja dan Uran remaja.
Note: ada halaman yang hilang dan sebagai gantinya halaman dobel. Halaman 65 s/d 96 hilang, dan sebagai gantinya halaman 97 s/d 128 jadi dobel. He, kesalahan penjilidan saat produksi pastinya...
