Londra, 1842.

Adorei a história, a escrita.

(review in English below)

Ufa!

Absolutely love this book! I have read thousands of books but this one is my all time favourite book. I have read it soooo many times! I just fell in love with the characters and this is the only book that has ever made me cry....several times. The book tells the story of Matilda from when she was a young girl in London to a grown woman. The storytelling is so wonderfully written and just makes you feel that you are Matilda. Love her courage and how she strong she is no matter what life throws h ...more

Tal como o out

People have described 'Never Look Back' as one of the best intriguing novels Lesley Pearce has written. I contend she is the most lazy author I have ever read, and if anything, should have put this particular story in seven books and not one. She has the amazing gift of skipping to the end, wilfully overlooking what would be the more interesting story and preferring to refer back to the alleged incident in one or two sentences. Example: Matilda is ready to embark on a dangerous journey with her ...more

Opinião no blog http://howtoliveathousandlives.blogsp...

I like Lesley Pearse the way I like Pringles, they have very little nutritional value, but they make a fine mental "snack" when I don't want to engage my brain. I have enjoyed her books such as Georgia, Tara, and Ellie for many years.

This book though is just so poorly written and researched, and uses so many lazy cliches, that it's not even got entertainment value.

For example...she states (not once, but twice) that 6 million people died in the Civil War. I don't care if you're British, you shoul

I've struggled with how to rate this one but as this website is called 'good reads' and this book most definitely is a good read- I've gone with 4. I found the first half of the book to be totally absorbing and thought it was destined to be my all time best book. As it progressed, however, I became frustrated with the main character who made some strange and selfish decisions which seemed to be totally out of character. Parts of the plot were cliched, predictable & too good to be true and th ...more

Absolutely adored this book! loved the characters, visualized the environments... got teary eyed during tragedy. It was a well written fantastic book, with a gripping moving story.

The character of Matty was brilliantly written. Actually, most of the characters were superb with ideal portrayals making the reader identify with them, and connect with them.

I'm truly torn as to how to review this book. On one hand it created a sweeping sense of time and place, on the other, it felt like an author's first book. Take as an example the character of Lily - was it just me that felt hugely uncomfortable with the total change of character from total whinge and paranoi about disease, to happy earth mother digging vegetable gardens in near poverty? And poor Matty, the hardships and loss of people she loved almost became farcical in their regularity - I foun ...more

I have read thousands of books and this is by far one of my all time favourite. I love the way Lesley Pearse's books are set hundreds of years ago living in poverty and terrible hardship. The characters are all so believable and genuine and you feel for them each and every time. Books have in the past made me shed a tear or been sad but this had me actually crying,it got to me so deeply. I love this book and I'd give it 100 out of 10 if possible and couldn't recommend it enough.

This is a long novel about a working-class Londoner who, after hardships and sorrows, makes good in 19th-century California. It is well-researched, and the period detail is good without being overwhelming. The novel holds the attention throughout. If I have a criticism, it is that the heroine is improbably able to be brilliant at so many very different things. This made me feel totally inadequate!
