Kasey Crandall was a little older when she married her well-to-do husband and despite her best intentions felt herself falling into her mothers pattern of doing all she could to please her spouse and make her marriage successful. Right from the beginning she had niggling worries that she didn't fit into his glamorous lifestyle and would never measure up to either his expectations or his friends. She agreed to not having children(he had one from a previous marriage) but when she unexpectedly found herself pregnant was delighted and happy to welcome her beautiful daughter into the world. Her husband could have cared less. He had no interest in the child whatsoever and used manipulation to try and force Kasey to put him before the baby. When it appears something major might be wrong with the baby, Kasey finds herself on her own in determining how best to protect her daughter Tess and get the best treatment for her.
Enter Jay, an alcoholic ex-leader turned journalist who is researching a story about babies born with unexplained health issues. He has an interesting relationship with his 15 year old son and is trying to rebuild their relationship over driving lessons. Jay met Kasey when she was outside the hospital in labour and is immediately drawn to her. When he find out later thatcdomething is wrong with her daughter he sets out almost without thinking about it to be there and support her. The story he is writing apparently did go to publication, but readers weren't really given a full explanation of whether there was guilt or intent to do harm.
The book was an interesting one. From early on I felt that Kasey's husband was being abusive to her - not so much in a physical way but definitely in a bullying one. He was not a likeable character.
Throughout this process Kasey discovered more about who she really was and what she wanted her life to look like. It was thought provoking and while some readers might not appreciate all the choices she made, Kasey turned out to be stronger than she thought.
It is a good story of a mother's love. The main character knew that things were not right with her newborn daughter. Despite the fact that most people in her life told her to just be content with what she had, she risked other peoples' opinions of her to find answers to her concerns. I wish the story could have been told without the incident of infidelity in the novel. That's the only part of the story I didn't like.
This book was a little different than the typical contemporary romances that I usually read in that it was much more about the main character and her daughter than the love relationship between the hero and heroine.
Kasey Crandall has it all. She has a wealthy husband, wants for nothing, and now has a newborn little girl to complete the picture. Except that things are perfect and she’s certain that something is wrong with her baby, Tess, but no one seems to take her seriously or believe her. Former drunk and disbarred attorney Jake McGraw is trying to get his life together. He had it all and ended up throwing it all away. In an attempt to make amends with his life, he has a new job and is starting over with his teenage son, Danny. Meeting Kasey at a party, these two have instant chemistry–but HELLO! Kasey’s married! But Jake can’t seem to stay away from these two girls (Kasey and Tess are pretty much inseparable, to Mr. Crandall’s dismay) and he tries to help Kasey find answers to her questions about Tess.
[Spoiler Alert] I liked the story and I really liked the way Kasey’s relationship with Tess was written. What I had a difficult time getting my brain around was the infidelity. You can package this any way you want, but she ends up cheating on her spouse. Perhaps the moral of the story is that the husband “cheated” first by not following through on his end of his vows, but he wasn’t unfaithful and an eye-for-and-eye’s not (to me) how a marriage should work anyway. Besides that, the book was excellent. I had some issues getting into the book because I knew right away something was wrong with Tess and me, expecting myself, wasn’t too thrilled to read a book about a baby with issues. But the moral of her side of the story is to not believe everything you hear and to trust your instincts, which is good advice for anything mother.
A lovely story about a new Mother who fights for her daughter against her husband, family and friends! A new Mom who knows something isn't quite right with this newborn child but whom everyone feels she is "overreacting"!
From back cover:
Nine months ago, Kasey Crandall would have defined "lucky" as "my life". Married to a wealthy, generous older man, pregnant with a once-in-a-lifetime baby, she was oozing with joy. Now, however, she was more apt to think, "just my luck."
Yes, motherhood was as glorious as she expected and she totally adored her daughter. Yet an inner voice was telling her something was wrong with her baby. But nobody wanted to hear that her life was not as perfect as it seemed.
Kasey knew she needed to be strong for her child and get her the right help...even if it meant going against her husband's wishes. Even if it meant turning to another man. Because sometimes a woman just has to make her own luck."
Liked the Descriptive language that is trademark JG and makes me laugh. I did not like the "taking God's name in vain" swearing. This is a more serious tome dealing with: marriages, divorce, baby health issues, AA and parenthood. Jake's internal commentary as he taught his 15 yr old son, Danny, to drive was a hoot !
