Great introduction to the world of grant writing. Teaches not only expected norms but shows great rhetorical tools as well. Also highlights fundamentals of building (and keeping) great relationships with donors. Encourages creativity and ownership of your cause's/institution's uniqueness and voice. Johnson also addresses dealing with failure and how it can actually help your writing tactics grow. She is ridiculously encouraging and helps you find other great resources on the craft. I'm shocked by how much I enjoyed this.

It’s a good introduction to the world of grant writing but I say that you learn more from practice than reading about how it’s done. A useful resource tool.

This was one of the better grant writing books I have read. Many grant writing books contain a lot of information on researching and content management, which often steals time away from the process of effectively writing a grant proposal. This book offered a lot of samples to help generate ideas and provided a jumping off point on how to execute ideas and gain funding and sponsorship. This book also provided several additional resources for “homework” and research navigation.

This book doesn't provide any insight beyond what most would consider common sense. If this is really all it takes to be a "gorilla" grant writer, then the standards are very low.

A very general "do this" and "do that" style book that anyone could have written

This was pretty basic, but boosted my confidence that if you are knowledgeable about your organization and know how to structure an argument, you will be able to write winning grant proposals.

Great book. A help to those of us who are just learning about grant writing. A primer and a reference in plain, understandable English.

As someone learning the grant writing process I found this book to be helpful. Johnson goes into details about the information you should acquire prior to writing and the files you should create once you've submitted your proposal. If there was one item I would have liked it would have been a chapter on terminology. The difference between "staff" and "program costs" isn't something a new grant writer would know. That would have been helpful.
