Featuring recipes that use five or fewer steps and family fun projects that be can accomplished within an hour, "Katie Brown's Weekends" teaches "domesticity for dummies." The end results of the more than 100 recipes and simple projects are depicted in 175 glorious, full-color photos.
I've never heard of Katie Brown. I was a little confused about the book, though. She explains in the introduction that she'd like to reclaim her weekends and not be as busy. However, the projects and cooking that are mentioned in this book will keep her very busy on the weekends!!! I thought it was oddly organized, too.
Katie Brown is one of my favorite ladies in the cooking/crafting/gardening/entertaining etc world. She has a TV show on PBS that I love to watch, many books and a really fun blog/website. I am constantly inspired by her. I only have 2 of her books so far, but I love the recipes! Of course there are crafts and other ideas as well, but the recipes are fantastic! She is a Midwestern/Great Lakes girl at heart like me, so I love to read her books because they are so rooted in family and entertaining those whom you love the very most. When that is at the heart of a book you can't go wrong. Her recipes range from homemade classics and staples to culinary twists on basics and global influences for theme parties. There is something for everyone in these books!
In the introduction of Weekends, Katie Brown explains how she lost her “2 treasured days” to work over the years – work work work!! Her hope was to inspire readers to reclaim or reinvent their weekends. This book is a compilation of activities accompanied by recipes in 6 chapters.
I think the introduction was a bit misleading. At least, I thought I’d be inspired to find some fun activities to do on the weekend. Sadly, no new ideas here. This is pretty much a cookbook and what activities or projects that are listed are a lot of work work work!! I suppose it depends on one’s personal definitions of leisure and labour.
Weekends is a luxurous treat to read and reread anytime. It's has beautiful pages filled with simple and more challenging recipes-only because you may not have the ingredients on hand, and easy projects. Her mantra is simplicity. My favorite is the twist on S'mores on pages 152-53)-easy and everyone will love them.
Overall, I give this four stars. I am disappointed that many of the recipes contain convenience foods, but I suppose that the intent is saving time. While some of the projects weren't of interest, others I liked quite a bit.
