This is a gorgeous and practical guide to combining Japanese fabrics and traditional Oriental quilting style with fast, super-easy techniques. All the quilt designs are accompanied with beautiful photography and clear diagrams to support the text instructions.
Each of the ten quilts is made up in two different colourways for maximum inspiration, and instructions are shown for how to finish them using both as hand and machine quilted designs. Quilt designs include traditional Japanese motifs such as fans and kimonos. The instructions include traditional Japanese quilting techniques such as Sashiko.
As an added bonus, there are also simple-to-make homestyle projects for using up leftover quilt blocks. Japanese patchwork style is incredibly versatile, and the finished projects will be at home in the most modern interiors as well as rustic cottages. These quilted projects include a Rice Bag, Floor Cushion and Table Runner.
Susan Briscoe was first introduced to sashiko in the early 1990s while teaching English in northern Japan. Her sashiko designs have been published in numerous books and magazines, and she is widely recognised as a expert in Japanese sewing techniques.

I have read many of Susan Briscoe's books about Japanese quilting and they have all been excellent. Her love and knowledge of Japanese fabrics and culture shine throughout, and "Japanese Quilt Inspirations" is no exception. Here she concentrates on using straight-forward stitching to make impressive projects from all kinds of Japanese and oriental fabric - scraps, panels, yardage and pieces. Each of the 10 quilts, two bags, cushion and table-runner projects has a Japanese name which is translated, explained, and beautifully illustrated. You will find it hard to choose which to make and if you have an oriental panel languishing in your stash, there are several great ideas for you.
Susan gives clear instructions and interesting quilting suggestions plus excellent sections on Japanese fabrics and the meaning of many Japanese motifs.

Lots of gorgeous ideas for Japanese fabrics and quilts. I especially love the first one using the furoshiki cloth. I have a few from our trip last year, and now I have better ideas what to do with them!

Japanese Quilt Inspirations gives insight into another quilting culture besides American. Beautiful quilts featured in natural settings catch your eye as you flick through this 2011 title. Having native Japanese quilters interviewed would have been a nice addition to this content, but the book is still inspirational for creating new looks and design patterns. Recommended.
