Tales From The Asylum is a fun compliation of steampunk stories with some imaginative ideas. All the stories are meant to be tales of the inmates in the asylum so they hang together quite well. Some work better than others but that's always the case in a short story collection like this.
It looks like these are all (or were at the time) new and unpublished authors and that does show in the writing. A lot of them would benefit from a bit more polish and a professional editor to go over them.

This book is something of an enigma.
A certain amount of passion is evident in every page, at times compromising the technical finesse of some writers, but there is a certain naïveté about these stories which makes them all the more compelling. There is an impression that the book is the work of steampunks writing science-fiction rather than science-fiction writers attempting to capitalise on the steampunk trend, which makes for a thoroughly engaging read.

I loved this book! It's Steampunk written by Steampunks and the love and enthusiasm for the genre shines through in all of the stories. There's a real feel of the gothic horror of the genre in the book and I found that it leaves you wanting more. Each tale is cleverly linked together by Arkwright, the warden, as he makes his rounds of the asylum. For me, it felt as though I was truly there, listening to the stories of the people caught inside its walls. Definitely one I'll be getting the rest of

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. While some of the stories were a bit clunky, the enthusiasm of the writers was clear throughout, and as someone who was a newcomer to the Steampunk genre it was an excellent way to explore the subject. Indeed, the whole remit of the volume was to give unpublished writers a way to get their work into print; Steampunks writing for Steampunks, brilliant! I would recommend it very highly.
