Mumien
Since I´m very interested in ancient Egypt it was only a matter of time before I began to read about mummies and their embalming procedures. This book describes the various trials of the ancient egypts to embalm their kings and prepare them for eternity. You read about funerary rituals just as about environment, living conditions and also diseases which plagued the inhabitants of Kemet (ancient name for Egypt). Furthermore there are illustrations of facial reconstructions of two mummies (but not from kings which would have interested me much more I admit). There are still some mysteries about mummification at least when this book was first published (1991). I have the reprint of 2001 but I´m not sure this book was updated with the latest results of the research. But it´s easy and understandable to read and is a good way getting into that kind of subject.

Da ich am alten Ägypten sehr interessiert bin, hat es nicht lange gedauert bis ich anfing ein Buch über Mumien und die Einbalsamierung zu lesen. Dieses Buch beschreibt die verschiedenen Versuche der alten Ägypter ihre Könige einzubalsamieren und sie für die Ewigkeit zu erhalten. Man liest über Bestattungsriten, über die Umwelt, Lebensbedingungen und auch über die Krankheiten die die Einwohner Kemets (alter Name für Ägypten) geplagt haben. Desweiteren sind Abbildungen von Gesichtsrekonstruktionen zweier Mumien (aber keine Könige, hätte mich mehr interessiert muss ich zugeben). Es gibt immer noch Rätsel über die Mummifizierung, zumindest im Jahr des Erscheinen dieses Buches (1991). Ich habe die Neuauflage von 2001 aber ich glaube nicht, dass die neuesten Forschungsergebnisse aufgenommen wurden. Das Buch ist leicht und verständlich zu lesen und ist ein guter Einstieg in dieses Thema.
