Lauren and the Double Disaster
There’s going to be an art fair and the students works will be auctioned off to benefit a children’s hospital. Lauren worries that no one will buy their work, but Kat assures her their parents will. Kate fantasizes that a famous art director will want her piece. Lauren doesn’t really have any ideas of what to do, but her friends tell her they’ll help her think of something. Stephanie says she hopes fashion design will be on the list of things they can do. Patti doesn’t know either. She’s thinking of the Italian themed potluck theme of the sleepover they’ll be having. Stephanie’s mom will be making the Italian bread and some cookies. Lauren will be brining a salad with everything in it. Kate will be bringing desert but doesn’t tell then what it is.

Hope comes over and sits with them. She says she’ll be doing something in “Fiber Arts” (needle point, quilting, that kind of thing). She invites them over to see her loom. Lauren just wants to put the art fair out of her mind-she’s not artistic-. Carla asks how many they can do. The art teacher says one-they only have two weeks-. She lets them use the rest of the time to talk over what they’re going to do to each other. Patti says she’s going to do something with computer graphics. Kate says she’s going to do something with art and photography-which is also on the list-. There’s nothing on the list that appeals to Lauren. Stephanie calls out (painting, sculpture, and fashion design). Stephanie says Lauren shouldn’t have a problem because she’s creative, but Lauren thinks that doesn’t mean she’s artistic-and soon everyone will know it-.

At the sleepover, Patti serves spaghetti, buttered bread, and salad. What Lauren hopes won’t happen does. They start talking about the art fair. Stephanie’s already started some sketches for designs. Kate’s still narrowing down her ideas. Patti says the film she wanted to look at isn’t at the sceience museum anymore-it’s about animation-. Stephanie thinks they should make their own art gallery. They can have it in her apartment. Kate says they can also have a trophy case for their blue ribbons. Stephanie says maybe they should keep their projects a secret. Lauren confesses she still hasn’t thought of anything. Kate suggests drawing, but Lauren reminds Kate she can’t draw. Stephanie suggests they all have a theme and the theme will be friendship. Stephanie says she wonders what Hope’s weaving will look like and they decide to invite her to the next sleepover at Lauren’s house. Then they all decide to go to the Riverhurst Art Museum for inspiration. Kate’s secret desert is spanomi? Also peanut butter cookies. Lauren bites into a cookie and it aches. Her friends suggests she go to the dentist. Lauren doesn’t think she needs braces and just hopes it’s not a cavity.

After this they listen to dedications, watch “Haunted Hands” and play “Mad Libs”. At the art museum they check out the “Folk Art” first. Lauren doesn’t find it interesting so she goes to look at the “Cat Art”. Lauren decides to do a cat sculpture. But when she tries to sketch it out she realizes maybe it won’t be so easy. Kate calls later but Lauren doesn’t tell her what it is. Her theme will be “Sleepover Cats Forever”. Lauren does tell her she’s doing a sculpture. Kate tries to get it out of her but Lauren reminds her it’s supposed to be a surprise. They make plans to go to the mall on Sunday to get supplies,

They all go off in different directions at the Craft store. Lauren has a hard time deciding on what kind of clay to get. They run into Jenny and Angela and Lauren tries to hide the clay behind her back and then slyly puts it back on the shelf. Kate buys a TON of photography equipment. Stephanie doesn’t buy anything. Lauren goes back to get the clay. Then they hit up the “Pizza Palace”, They run into Jenny and Angela again and they have a big bag from “Hales” but they aren’t letting on what’s inside. Lauren again gets a pain in her tooth when she tries to eat. Lauren starts the sculpture when she gets home -of Rocky sleeping on her pillow-. It just doesn’t work out and all she does is mess up her hands -and the towels-. At dinner, Lauren goes to eat her dinner but there’s the pain again. Luckily she’s got an appointment on Wednesday. Roger reminds her of all the junk she eats. Lauren thinks she just might have to start cutting back-because as he says its bad for athletes-.

The next day Lauren realizes her clay has dried out so she has to go with Roger to the mall to pick out some more. She spots Jenny again but Jenny doesn’t pay her any attention. Her nails are red and Lauren and she notice they both have the same clay. Lauren wants to give up but she can’t let her friends down. Lauren moves her work to the basement and she makes something that looks like a cat, a dog, and a pig. The next day, Kate asks how it’s going and Lauren admits it’s not working out. Kate suggests that maybe she can help but Jenny walks in. Lauren makes her be quiet and says she thinks Jenny is trying to copy her project. At lunch, Kate tells Patti and Stephanie. They assure her that whatever she does will be twice as good because Jenny isn’t good at art. Stephanie says she’s not the only one being copied. Ginger and Christy stole her fashion design sketches. She says they’re missing and she saw them huddled over some drawings but they scooped them up before she could see. Later, they were arguing about a famous designer.

Stephanie says she’s going to spy on them. Patti says it isn’t right but Stephanie says it wasn’t right to steal her sketches. They then notice Ginger and Christy arguing and Patti says if she waits, they’ll probably bring them back out of guilt. Or maybe she’s misplaced them. Hope comes over and they invite her to their sleepover. The dentist tells Lauren she might have to start watching what she eats. Then he takes some xrays. Lauren has three savities, but the receptionist tells her the dentist can take care of all three in a single appointment-and gets her to make another one-. Lauren feels bad when she gets home and wonders why she’s the only one out of her friends with cavities-. GOOD QUESTION! Reluctantly she has to tell her parents. Roger than gives a scolding and her mom hops in. Rocky makes her feel better and she takes it as a sign that she needs to be working on her project. So she gets to work. When her father comes home, she gets another lecture.

Lauren is depressed and tells her friends now she’ll have to go on a diet. They see Ginger and Christy but Stephanie says she found the sketches under her bed, But she says she bets there still doing something with Christian La Pearl. All the SF’s bound together and say they’ll all try to eat healthier. Hope says she’ll bring Zucchini bread to the party. When Lauren gets home, her mom accidently has thrown away her clay so she has to go back to the art supply store. At the mall, she sees Stephanie-whose going to check out the fabric store-. She says they might not have the right material. She might have to go to the city. They then see Ginger and Christy and decide to follow them into “Material Pleasure”. They hear them talking about needing to hurry up and make a decision. They didn’t tho get a chance to see the material. Lauren tells her not to worry. They won’t agree on anything. Stephanie thinks they’ll outdo her for sure. Lauren sees a elephant made of marble and decides to use plaster and gets a book on how to use it. They see Jenny again.

Plaster isn’t any easier to work with for Lauren. Lauren calls it “Her Plaster Disaster”. At lunch, Jenny brags that she’s going to win first place with her PLASTER sculpture and Lauren is outraged. The SF’s promise to help her, but Lauren doesn’t want to spend the sleepover mixing plaster. So Kate says she’ll come over and help. (Stephanie and Patti have other plans). Hope also says she’ll help. She’s mixed plaster for casts for her dad. Kate tells Lauren her problem is she needs a helper to help her add the water while she stirs. Hope accidently lets Bullwinkle and Rocky out and they have to chase after them. IN- Hope lets Bullwinkle- IN not out. The plaster is in the bucket and when they get the bucket and turn it over the plaster cracks into four pieces. But Kate notices the pieces look like fries, a hamburger, an apple, and an orange. It’s the war between the healthy and unhealthy foods. And it fits in with what they’re doing. Lauren isn’t convinced but she’s desperate.

At the sleepover, Lauren announces they’re going to eat healthy snacks. Kate says she brought her marshmallow fudge but Laren says she’ll have to give it up for tonight. Patti says the key is moderation. They try the Zucchini bread. To Lauren’s surprise it’s good and taste like spice cake. Lauren shows them the pieces and explains her idea. (After Stephanie thinks the round piece is a baseball. For a minute Lauren considers doing a sports sculpture). Bullwinkle gets into the kitchen tries to eat Lauren’s plaster hamburger. He gets dust everywhere. Roger apologizes but Kate makes light of it. She says at least Bullwinkle knew it was a hamburger. For their snack they have rice cakes, aples, oranges, sugar free chocolate pudding and sugar free Dr. Pepper. They don’t think much of the rice cakes=if not for the peanut butter they’d have no taste-. They then play a game of “Truth Or Dare”.

Lauren asks if she really thought her pieces looked like food. Hope says tactfully she thinks Bullwinkle was an art critic in a former life. Oh there’s also pretzels and low fat popcorn. Stephanie wants to take a quiz called “Doodle Analysis” but no one wants to take it-it tests your creativity-. Kate wants to watch a horror movie. No one wants to do that either. For the rest of the “Truth or Date” game, Stephanie dares Hope to dare her to sneak over to Christy and Giners to spy on them. They all debate whether this will be wrong. Hope dares Stephanie instead to wait until the fair to see what they do. Stephanie says it’s the harest date she’s ever had but she accepts. Lauren wants someone to dare her to spy on Jenny.

Then they call a bunch of boys. Patti calls Henry. Stephanie calls Tyler. Roger comes down to the basement and suggests a sculpter to Lauren that makes plaster body molds. So, she checks out a book, thinks his art is interesting, and decides it doesn’t look so hard. She need petroleum jelly for it. Lauren keeps with her diet-even tho it’s boring-. Lauren eventually gets as excited as her friends about her project and tells her friends she has a new idea, but hopes she can pull it off. Stephanie says she saw Jenny who was buying three more bags of plaster. She tells her tho it’s not her business what’s it for. Lauren wonders if her project will be better. Stephanie also saw Jane buying water colors and she looked worried. The art fair is only five days away. Jane was telling everyone she was almost finished but it seems like she was just starting. Hope invites them over the next day but Lauren has to get her cavities filled.

In class the tickets are given out. The teacher says they have to sell fifteen. Carla asks for more. Jenny tho says she bet she can sell one hundred. Carla just takes fifteen -defeated=.. Kate says she bet her dad can sell some at the hospital. After Lauren’s cavities are filled, she goes home. She can’t eat so she goes to work on her art project. Seeing all the ruined pieces tho she starts to cry. Hope calls to check on Lauren and then tells her she can come over and help. Kate decides to do a film on Hope and call it “Weaver At Work” She tells Lauren this the next day. They all try to get out of Jenny what she’s doing-and why she bought three bags of plaster-. Lauren realizes that she doesn’t care if Jenny teases her. She’s worked hard on her project and has a new respect for artist. She also realizes Hope is a good friend. She really helped her without doing it for her.

At the sleepover on Friday, Lauren brings a new avocado dip and they all agree it’s just as good as her old one. They do the double quiz. Lauren does faces and surprisingly it says she’s creative -and will be successful-. Patti does squares inside triangles-and it says she has a mathematical brain. Stephanie does floating hearts and people in glamorous outfits-and it says she has a thing for clothes and romance-. Kate does rows of stars-and it says she’s neat and organized-. At the art festival, Jenny’s piece turns out to be a face. Lauren thinks it’s a death mask. Lauren’s sculpture is of Hopes four arm-four of them- crossing one another. Stephanie does a quilt with customized patches to symbolize things about the SF’s. Kate does a collage of pictures showing there history and Patti does a poem surrounded by computer grahphics. The poem is from a book they gave her when she was sick. Hope does a landscape weaving. Ginger and Christy make a tiger print blouse and plaid shorts. Kate and Patti get red ribbons. Hope gets a white ribbon. Lauren and Stephanie get blue ribbons.

My Thoughts
I could relate to this one and sympathize with Lauren. Even though I (well was) artistitc-it’s a skill that sadly I let get rusty- in college I remember we had to do a project and I saw a book about paper sculpture -and I immediately feel in love with it. So I tried to imitate what I saw with there was a story in a fairy tale book someone gave me when I was younger-and it’s one of my all time favorite books because of the illustrations-. It’s called “Dean’s A Book Of Fairy Tles and I think the story is “The Dustman”. Well, I wanted to do a paper sculpture of that illustration only it turns out to be a mess. I’m surprised I even got a C on it. I still have it in my house and whenever I happen to come across it in the basement I just wince like that is SO BAD! Unfortunately, I didn’t have a friend like Hope that knew anything about how to do paper sculpture. Even to this day I’d still love to learn that skill. Like Lauren I was never much good at things with clay either. I took a poettery class in college also as part of my art degree and the bowl I made wasn’t much better than the bad paper sculpture project I attempted. I thought her sculpture sounded unique tho and I’m glad she finally found something that worked for her. All their projects sounded pretty cool! It’s one of those times when I wished the book had pictures in the back-like some of them in the BSC tended to do.

Truthfully, this was one of the weaker entries to the Sleepover Friends series. I appreciated watching Lauren struggle with her art project (lol that sounds mean), but eventually it was like "what wacky way is this one going to get ruined?" It became kind of redundant.

But it was nice to have Lauren back as the narrator - I wonder how that'll go over the rest of the series? (Which, truthfully, is five more books and a Super Edition. WAH!) And I enjoyed seeing both Jenny and Ginger as antagonists in this book.

It's interesting to read the old view on how cavities are formed. All throughout the book it kept pushing the message of the 80s junk food causes cavities. No it doesn't. Not brushing your teeth properly or caring properly for your teeth does. The fact that all four girls eat the same thing and only one got cavities should be your first clue. That was annoying but really what I remember people thinking back then as well as junk food causing pimples something the BSC often pointed out. None of these are true. That got annoying and it seemed like maybe they were trying to get a Stacey like character who can't eat sweets and it flopped. As well as having three cavities (does she brush her teeth at all? I love junk food and have only had 1 or 2 in my life so far) Also how do you not notice three cavities? The pain must be horrendous but the pain just seems to come and go.
The other story is an art fair and like me Lauren sucks at art and doesn't know what to do. What follows is all the ways her project can be destroyed, mom throws it out accidentally, Bullwinkle eats it, the clay dries out, the plaster hardens when they rush out for an emergency. But it was interesting to see all four girls plus the new fifth Hope incorporate their theme of Sleepover Friends into their work. This one was okay, not the best one but just okay.
