Benjamin Harrison was an honest man who had a vision for the United States. As president he saw the need for Hawaii to become a state and he also saw a need for the Panama Canal - neither plan of which the sitting Congress would pass and neither of which he would see occur in his lifetime. Yet, both were put into place at a future time.
He did establish the Pan American Games which are still exists today.
Members of both parties criticized big businesses which increased in size to the point of controlling an entire industry, at the time called a trust. Harrison gained support of Congress for the Sherman Anti-Trust Act limiting the power of large companies. This act is still in existence.
Benjamin Harrisons' father was the only person in history to have both his father and his son become president.
President Harrison was the last former Civil War officer to be a seated president.
I have only read a couple of the Profiles of the Presidents non-fiction book series for students. The presentation is done well, just not as well as some of the other series I have access to check out from the public library. Each book has beautiful photographs, maps, timelines, a glossary, and informative facts that are given in chronological order about each president and his time before, during and after the White House, and finally a complete list of all the U.S. Presidents and their years in office. The reading level is best suited for junior to high school age scholars.
