33 books198 followersI grew up in a small northern Minnesotan town married my high school sweetheart, had two beautiful children and as soon as we could we moved to a warmer climate. I have worked with my husband building and decorating custom homes for years. After loving every kind of vampire book, movie and series I decided that I wanted to know more. I can write a book I thought, how hard can that be? Well.... But I stuck to it and finished my first book Royal Blood Chronicles Book One in August 2009. I now have ten books and three novellas in the Royal Blood Chronicles, two in Phantom Lives, three in the adult dystopian Pathogen series, two in h thriller/mystery series Silken Ties, with Corporate Ties and Thorns of Revenge and 25 books in total. My parents always told me that I could do anything that I wanted, work hard, study and do it right. I believe that and live that way every day.
I started writing this new vampire series for teens and their moms because I myself wanted something different to read. I was tired of all the modern versions of vampire books, there had to be more to these long lived beings. Where had they been what had they seen? I wanted, no I NEEDED to know more so Royal Blood Chronicles was born! As in Royal Blood Chronicles, Phantom Lives features strong female characters and action and adventure mixed with romance, friendship and a historical backdrop

Katrina, the Beginning follows seventeen year old Katrina, a princess who also happens to be a vampire. She lives in a world full of beauty and refined taste. A world any girl would dream of. But soon that world is threatened by those who do not understand the vampires, a select group of humans known as the Volator who seek out vampire covens to destroy them. But Katrina soon realizes they are not the only threat.
The Council has called a meeting to discuss those who will venture into the New World called Americas, so they can begin building covens there. But just as the other kings arrive from the other royal clans someone attacks, hoping to kidnap the other four princesses and at the same time take down Katrina’s father before he can become the new High Regent. Katrina manages to save herself and help rescue the other girls. But just as all seems at peace again, a new threat emerges along with secrets Katrina was no where near prepared to hear.
I have a like/hate relationship with this book. I started off thoroughly enjoying this book. I was very interested to see what a royal vampire family would be like. I enjoyed the Renaissance romantic atmosphere behind the novel. The descriptions of the elegance and sophistication were vivid, you could truly feel as if you were apart of Katrina and her royal life. I also loved that at the beginning both Katrina and Quinn narrated the book.
Katrina is seventeen but wise for her age. She is strong and intelligent. She isn’t a total girly girl and doesn’t mind getting dirty. She can stand up for herself, voice her own opinions and fight her own battles. I really enjoyed that about her character as well as the other girls. They didn’t simply care about dresses and boys and wealth. They truly care about their families and defending their kingdoms to make sure peace remains.
I did get annoyed at a couple of things within the novel. The pacing is very zig-zag like. There’s action but the suspense built up is lacking. It’s either too quick or too dragged out. Like the fainting scene with Katrina, in the same sentence she faints then comes to like it never happened. There is either not enough time to really appreciate what’s going on and get invested or the scenes are written with too much useless description or dialogue. The dialogue is a bit harsh at times. It’s flow seems strained as if the author is trying too hard to make sure readers feel some kind of connection with her characters.
The scene where Katrina’s mother comes back into her life, it’s completely out of left field! Readers hadn’t heard anything about Katrina’s mother until she showed up. There was no build up leading up to her entrance and the new information that followed. She just simply shows up.
Katrina goes from being madly in love with Quinn to passing it up as “blood lust” then saying she’s in love with vampire Damien but continues her flirtation with Quinn. Um . . . What the hecks?! Readers barely have time to adapt to the romance between Katrina and Quinn, to read their love flourishing, when Katrina just throws him to the side and goes after Damien. Then Quinn is all okay with it and happy she’s with Damien and they can still be friends. I just didn’t buy it *frown*
Quinn just disappears for a huge chunk of the story and I much preferred him over Damien. I really like Quinn’s character and hated the fact that he was taken out so abruptly. He comes back into the story but out of no where and acting as if everything is fine. Again, that’s just unbelievable.
I skimmed and sometimes just skipped entire pages because the story was just dragging too much and making me bored. I tired very quickly of reading of the girls constant descriptions of clothes and the elaborate parities.
Katrina is probably one of the characters readers are truly able to connect to and Quinn from the beginning. The actions scenes were actually quite well written. There was plenty of action through Katrina, The Beginning. It was fun being able to see how Katrina sees and senses everything with her special gifts. I also enjoyed the scenes where all five girls connect their powers to enhance each other’s gifts.
Katrina, The Beginning was a very interesting read. Full of beauty and elegance along with powerful female characters young girls can look up to. There are some rough edges to the novel but a novel worth giving a chance nonetheless. I look forward to reading the next installment of the Royal Blood Chronicles, I just hope the dialogue and pacing of the novel are far better than the first.

It seems to be a trend. Unless it's an amazing book, the first in a series is just ok. It's almost like a really long prologue that finally gets good about 70% in.
It's about vampires. A royal family of vampires so they have what seems an unlimited amount of wealth. They are all very good-looking, and each one has their own special talent; like premonitions, extra-keen sense of smell, communicating telepathically, ability to maneuver the elements like wind and fire....(any of this sounding familiar?)They hunt and only eat animals, along with normal food, and something called Crimson which is a special vitamin blend with some human blood mixed in.
It felt very much like a Twilight spin-off. In Breaking Dawn, several 'clans' or 'families' from afar made their way to support the Cullens. This book felt like the clan from Germany. Very nice vampires, just trying to live in piece, but of course, at every turn their is danger and they must use their skills to help preserve their species and current way of life.
There was also a lot of meals in this book. Almost half the book was describing what they would wear at the next meal, what the meal was, and the walk back from a meal. Not kidding.
Katherine or 'Kat' was a nice vampire girl. Extremely gifted, and ends up caught in a love triangle. I know. You're shocked.
All in all, just ok.

Being a book about Vampires, I expected Katina: The Beginning to be very not original. But I was wrong. This book definitely differentiates against all the other vampire books. It's like reading a book from a different time, not very modern at all. That what I though was great about it.
Elizabeth creates a world of action, romance and thrill. You wouldn't guess what will happen next. It always keeps you wanting to read more. It was a wonder I finished reading this book in a matter of hours.
I always thought that there will be a happily ever after with Quinn and Katrina. I was shocked when she started having feelings for Damien. Although Damien is nice in his own way, I prefer Quinn. Quinn's character is very alluring and when I read about his looks I can only conclude to say he is hot :)
I found this book to be quite similar to Vampire Diaries so if you love The Vampire Diaries. This book should definitely be on your to-read list.
I enjoyed reading this book so I really cannot wait to start reading the next book in the series! A gripping read.

Follow Katrina in this beginning tale of the Royal Blood Chronicle series. Katrina, the Beginning is told in the point of view of a young seventeen year old vampire named Katrina. The story takes place in the 1800s and although the Royals have their own servants that tend to their beck and call, the characters are still very compassionate and unselfish towards their staff and watchers. Of course, Katrina would never ever consider them staff but rather family. She discovers new friendships that are more important than she would ever have imagined. Katrina is a strong protagonist and is very easy to love. Hmm It seems like every male character becomes infatuated with her with in the small time of meeting her. She faces first time romance, enemies, and never ending adventure. Katrina realizes that she has a purpose and must learn to strengthen her gifts with her new companions.
I have to admit that I have been trying to finish this first review of the first book for over a week now. I have been writing a little.. saving… and then returning to write a lil’ more. Why? Well, the honest truth is that I have loved this series so much that I have been unable to put the continuing books of this series. However, I have been trying very hard to review the book as soon as I finish it but Elizabeth Loraine has done a wonderful job at ending each book in a manner that makes you dive into the next book with the wonder at what will possibly happen next.
This is my first series that I have read of Elizabeth Loraine’s books. I was very impressed with her story telling. I really enjoyed the fact that Katrina, The Beginning took place in the 1800s. It was nice to experience the mannerisms, fashion attire, and social events that the Royals are able to take part in. I also enjoyed the many characters that Ms. Loraine has included in this story. I love the two love interests Quinn and Damien. Hmm ……which should she choose? The handsome human watcher that has been her best friend since they were babies or the mysterious Royal Vampire Damien who is also very interested in Katrina. Poor Katrina! Which we all had that dilemma.
I n the beginning I felt that she fell in love to easily with the love interest but it actually makes a lot sense when you continue to read the books. So, do not give up! They continue to get very interesting and page turning. I must say that I have never read a book that talked about bath taking as much as Katrina does and enjoys. Hmm It does make me wish I had a Sara that would draw my warm bath with nice soothing fragrances and be there to brush my hair. Sounds relaxing.
I also love the many training exercises and battles that Katrina partakes in. Boy, Katrina may look sweet and innocent but I definitely would not mess with her. I would hate to be her enemy because she is definitely a warrior with her weapons and Vampire speed.
If you have not yet began this book series . I highly recommend Katrina, The Beginning be on your must read book shelf. Trust me! I have read many books. You will not put this book down anytime soon.

I’d like to thank Author Elizabeth Loraine for the wonderful “GIFT” of her novel Katrina, The Beginning (Royal Blood Chronicles)!! I’ve been lucky enough lately to be able to finally get hold of some of the books that have been on my TBR or wish list through some amazing authors. KATRINA being one of them, now to follow is my fair and unbiased opinion after reading Katrina.
Katrina is being told from the POV of a young seventeen year old royal vampire, of course her name is “Katrina” as the title of the book represents.
Taking place in the 1800’s, an era by the way that I absolutely loved in history.. The elegant fashions, old school manners, (so lacking now a days) and the many huge grand social balls or events that always seem to take place in the upper circle. And with her family being of royal blood, comes one of the luxuries of having you own staff/servants who tend to their every wish or need. (although their staff was treated like family)
Katrina and her family also have “Watchers” who keep them safe and trained them expertly in the arts of battle.
The Vox Brothers, seven in all were very loyal and trust worthy… Avery, Cedrik, Gregor, Gunter, Simon, Thomas and Quinn. (Unfortunately Cedrik and Gregor were killed in battle)
Katrina face sadness, love, (first time) adventure and enemies all within this great book. She knows that she has a purpose in life, and therefore she knows she must do everything possible to strengthen herself physically as well as her gifts. (Gunter helps her achieve this as her trainer) Gunter also help train Katrina’s friends/companions Letta, Rosa and El.
The daily routine of her life, from bathing , feedings all the way to her training was such a new take in some ways. Oh what I would give to have a helper, and yes a trainer.. That would be fantastic!
I really enjoyed the storyline of Katrina where her you have a young teenager by all appearances and class is the sweet innocence that a teenager should be, but by no means is she.. Katrina is a WELL trained warrior with her vampire speed and a mastery of her weapons.. *takes a wide birth around Katrina* A strong warrior that I for one wouldn’t want as my enemy!!
If you are looking for a wonderful book that is full of a mixture of romance, love and a dark side twist.. Then I recommend Katrina, The Beginning to be a awesome introduction to the Royal Blood Chronicles.

When I first began reading the book, I must be honest and say that I was thinking, " Okay here is a reverse Twilight with the girl being the vampire and the forbidden human lover a guy." But, this was so not the case.
The story is so much more than a romance story, it is packed full of action, adventure and most of all history.
It takes place in Europe about the time of the settling of America. Katrina is a strong vampire who is highly intelligent, strong, and independent. This first book is her story about how she came about being the leader of the Protectors- five female vampires who protect all the races of the world from evil.
Without spoiling the story, you will read about her background, follow her through her struggles with love, loyalty, and hold your breathe at the end of book one until you get book two in your hands.

From page one, I was so completely invested in Katrina. I have read several, SEVERAL (have I mentioned SEVERAL?) vampire novels recently. There are so many different ways to tell a great vampire story and Ms. Loraine hits on one of my favorites.
I noticed right from the beginning a darker, more forboding feel to Katrina, which takes place in the 1800s. Katrina, a young vampire, about to turn eighteen, is one of many in a royal family. Along with these vampires are the humans who watch them and protect them. Katrina's watcher, Quinn, has been with her since they were children. And from the start, I could tell that they both had a very special relationship.
Katrina grows up with just her father taking care of her, but it seems to work, as Kat is an independant, resourceful girl. She learned, from her watchers, how to fight and take care of herself. She immediately becomes a character that I can respect and take an interest in.
Katrina's world is coming to a halt, however, as all the clans come together due to several attacks on the vampires. In coming together, Katrina meets four other young vampire girls her age who seem to be fated to be together. They all have special powers that complement each other and in the process make great friends.
There are several love interests from Katrina through this story, and I'll admit, I couldn't decide who I was rooting for. But, between the subtle love story and intense magic and strong vampire women, I was swept away in this story.
I'm so excited to pick up the next installment!

I am a fan of YA novels. I am also a fan of vampire novels. Between my two loves, I had thought I had experienced the majority of what the genre could provide me, until I discovered independent author, Elizabeth Loraine!
In this delightful novel, based in the 1800s, we discover the amazing Katrina - a seventeen-year-old sword yielding, independent, compassionate, fascinating heroine who happens to be a vampire. But, don't get me wrong, she is not your everyday blood sucking variety! She has an amazing destiny to fulfill as one of the five and the watchers will help her see to it!
I don't believe in giving spoilers, but let me promise you this....If you like STRONG heroines who know how to fight for what they believe in as much as they love passionately, you will adore this novel. Also - although technically a YA genre novel, all you moms like me out there will sink into Loraine's dreamy world and enjoy the escape it provides. Full of beautifully written prose, this novel has a great narrative drive and you will fly through it.
Did I mention this is the first in the series??? Oh, go ahead and buy the others while you have the chance, you will want to read straight through.
This is an author you don't want to miss out on and if all becomes fair in the world, an agent will sweep her up and she will be published by Random house or one of the other big publishing companies.

I am again fortunate enough to read and review a work by Elizabeth Loraine, and as with Phantom Lives- Collier, she did not disappoint me. And Katrina is the first in a series, so I am thrilled to death! As if that was not great already, this follows in the path of my favorite character, the vampire.
Katrina is set in a different time period which is refreshing. In this era, Elizabeth has created a world with drama, action, romance and enough thrill to keep you turning those pages. This made this book a fast read for me, and left me wanting more!
I invite you into the world and love of Katrina and Quinn but be forewarned, there are twists in this love scenario and a third party pops his head up. I do not know if this pleases me or not because by Quinn's description, he is a hottie! Elizabeth handles it all with great care, creativity and imagination that pulls the reader in. I felt as a reader, I was a part of that world and experienced the things the character feels. There were times I felt very frustrated at the pace or the direction the book was going, but I hung in there. I am confident with the next ones in the series will help bring it all together. =)
I recommend this book to all who love the vampire/paranormal, but who also just want a terrific read! Give Elizabeth Loraine a chance, you will not be disappointed!!

Evil is lurking within the walls of Katrina's families castle. There is a spy who will stop at nothing to harm whoever is required to gain power and control of the vampire council. Katrina and her friends must unite and use all their fighting techniques and special gifts if they are to win.
Elizabeth Loraine writes a riveting story about what "true" and "loving friendships" are all about. Elizabeth will capture you with her wonderful story of five friends and their journey to becoming confident young vampires. Beautifully written, and I'm waiting for book two in this soon to be favorite vampire series of mine. If I could give this book 6 Bats out of 5 I would, that is how much I enjoyed this book. It's really that good!

Katrina: The Beginning was in my opinion a good read. Not great, but fairly good. The plot was better than the actual writing. I found a few spelling/grammar errors that were a little disconcerting. The plot however was very good.
A not quite 18 year old vampire named Katrina Von Dracek is learning about herself, her gifts, her family. Woven within the story are some interesting plot twists. Likeable characters and of course, the ever unlikeable characters, though we don't really see them as much.
While I enjoyed reading Katrina, I found myself a bit upset with the author Elizabeth Loraine for a few things. She brings up something in the mind of Katrina, that to me is very important, integral to the plot, and then does nothing with it. Near the end, she has a chance to really show out some sword play, fighting, etc...and just...doesn't. The ending was abrupt. So abrupt that I went back to reread the last chapter to see how I missed that it was about to end. So abrupt that I admit to getting a bit peeved.
I still would like to read the second book, if only to see how the author concludes the next book. Let's hope that it isn't so abruptly ending as this one.

Katrina is a young seventeen year old vampire, the main protagonist in this coming of age story. The story begins slowly building in excitement as Katrina buds in confidence. Elizabeth Loraine has spun a tale of action and adventure interwoven with sprinkles of romance. Set in historical times, the reader completely invests in their sword wielding heroine as she navigates through every twist and punch Loraine throws at her hesitating only slightly at the possibilities of love. Katrina is a wonderful example of a young heroine; fearless with a modicum of natural hesitancy, bold with an underlying sense of decency, and beautiful by any Vampiric standards.
I would recommend this read to all young adults who like a fast-paced exciting read. The characters are so relateable you can’t help but develop favorites. I know who I’m rooting for. The author invites her readers to join Katrina and her friends on their adventures. By the end of Book One you will be looking for Book Two.

Elizabeth Loraine’s Katrina; The Beginning is a combination of romance, chivalry, passion and adventure, from an era long gone, when love was eternal. Where men were still gentlemen and ladies were aloud to be ladies but these ladies kick some serious butt. Think Wuthering Heights meet Count Dracula and you’ve come close. This book will keep you guessing all the way to the end and then leave you wanting more.

Katrina, the Beginning is a fresh take on vampire novels. I was intrigued by some of the new and inventive ways that the author brings the audience into this interesting fantasy. The characters prove to be immediately endearing and the plot is interesting enough to hold your attention as well as continue on in the series. Great start to a new series!

I enjoyed reading this book very much!
It's an exciting story with alot of fun characters! The book had an ease to it that made it easy and fun to read and very hard to put down! I think it has something that everyone can enjoy.. adventure..action..passion.. mystery and intrique..

While this book started slow for me, it took off and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Katrina and Katherine are mirror twins and their gifts are growing as they find others of their kind. While things seem safe there is a group that is planning something evil, but Katrina isn't sure who she can trust. Torn between two very different men, she must choose wisely in love and for the safety of her people, but can she make a decision when she is just starting her life?

Lacking Premise and Grammar
I found myself unable to finish this book due to the grammatical errors spread throughout, the flat cookie-cut characters, and the lack of originality. The reason for two stars instead of only one star is because this author has potential, but still needs lots of practice.

Katrina is a young royal blooded vampire from a very old vampire family. She along with young members of each royal vampire family have been called to council. Why? No one knows, but Katrina feels the danger all around them and feels that she will be the one called upon to save them all. This fast paced historical saga begins here with Katrina as she begins the journey that will change all their lives forever. It’s full of romance, intrigue, danger and betrayal. To succeed the Five must become the many.”
Review: Katrina, the Beginning follows seventeen year old Katrina, a princess who also happens to be a vampire. She lives in a world full of beauty and refined taste. A world any girl would dream of. But soon that world is threatened by those who do not understand the vampires, a select group of humans known as the Volator who seek out vampire covens to destroy them. But Katrina soon realizes they are not the only threat.
The Council has called a meeting to discuss those who will venture into the New World called Americas, so they can begin building covens there. But just as the other kings arrive from the other royal clans someone attacks, hoping to kidnap the other four princesses and at the same time take down Katrina’s father before he can become the new High Regent. Katrina manages to save herself and help rescue the other girls. But just as all seems at peace again, a new threat emerges along with secrets Katrina was no where near prepared to hear.
I have a like/hate relationship with this book. I started off thoroughly enjoying this book. I was very interested to see what a royal vampire family would be like. I enjoyed the Renaissance romantic atmosphere behind the novel. The descriptions of the elegance and sophistication were vivid, you could truly feel as if you were apart of Katrina and her royal life. I also loved that at the beginning both Katrina and Quinn narrated the book.
Katrina is seventeen but wise for her age. She is strong and intelligent. She isn’t a total girly girl and doesn’t mind getting dirty. She can stand up for herself, voice her own opinions and fight her own battles. I really enjoyed that about her character as well as the other girls. They didn’t simply care about dresses and boys and wealth. They truly care about their families and defending their kingdoms to make sure peace remains.
I did get annoyed at a couple of things within the novel. The pacing is very zig-zag like. There’s action but the suspense built up is lacking. It’s either too quick or too dragged out. Like the fainting scene with Katrina, in the same sentence she faints then comes to like it never happened. There is either not enough time to really appreciate what’s going on and get invested or the scenes are written with too much useless description or dialogue. The dialogue is a bit harsh at times. It’s flow seems strained as if the author is trying too hard to make sure readers feel some kind of connection with her characters.
The scene where Katrina’s mother comes back into her life, it’s completely out of left field! Readers hadn’t heard anything about Katrina’s mother until she showed up. There was no build up leading up to her entrance and the new information that followed. She just simply shows up.
Katrina goes from being madly in love with Quinn to passing it up as “blood lust” then saying she’s in love with vampire Damien but continues her flirtation with Quinn. Um . . . What the hecks?! Readers barely have time to adapt to the romance between Katrina and Quinn, to read their love flourishing, when Katrina just throws him to the side and goes after Damien. Then Quinn is all okay with it and happy she’s with Damien and they can still be friends. I just didn’t buy it *frown*
Quinn just disappears for a huge chunk of the story and I much preferred him over Damien. I really like Quinn’s character and hated the fact that he was taken out so abruptly. He comes back into the story but out of no where and acting as if everything is fine. Again, that’s just unbelievable.
I skimmed and sometimes just skipped entire pages because the story was just dragging too much and making me bored. I tired very quickly of reading of the girls constant descriptions of clothes and the elaborate parities.
Katrina is probably one of the characters readers are truly able to connect to and Quinn from the beginning. The actions scenes were actually quite well written. There was plenty of action through Katrina, The Beginning. It was fun being able to see how Katrina sees and senses everything with her special gifts. I also enjoyed the scenes where all five girls connect their powers to enhance each other’s gifts.
Katrina, The Beginning was a very interesting read. Full of beauty and elegance along with powerful female characters young girls can look up to. There are some rough edges to the novel but a novel worth giving a chance nonetheless. I look forward to reading the next installment of the Royal Blood Chronicles, I just hope the dialogue and pacing of the novel are far better than the first.

They didn’t simply care about dresses and boys and wealth. They truly care about their families and defending their kingdoms to make sure peace remains.
I did get annoyed at a couple of things within the novel. The pacing is very zig-zag like. There’s action but the suspense built up is lacking. It’s either too quick or too dragged out. Like the fainting scene with Katrina, in the same sentence she faints then comes to like it never happened. There is either not enough time to really appreciate what’s going on and get invested or the scenes are written with too much useless description or dialogue. The dialogue is a bit harsh at times. It’s flow seems strained as if the author is trying too hard to make sure readers feel some kind of connection with her characters.
The scene where Katrina’s mother comes back into her life, it’s completely out of left field! Readers hadn’t heard anything about Katrina’s mother until she showed up. There was no build up leading up to her entrance and the new information that followed. She just simply shows up.
Katrina goes from being madly in love with Quinn to passing it up as “blood lust” then saying she’s in love with vampire Damien but continues her flirtation with Quinn. Um . . . What the hecks?! Readers barely have time to adapt to the romance between Katrina and Quinn, to read their love flourishing, when Katrina just throws him to the side and goes after Damien. Then Quinn is all okay with it and happy she’s with Damien and they can still be friends. I just didn’t buy it *frown*
Quinn just disappears for a huge chunk of the story and I much preferred him over Damien. I really like Quinn’s character and hated the fact that he was taken out so abruptly. He comes back into the story but out of no where and acting as if everything is fine. Again, that’s just unbelievable.
I skimmed and sometimes just skipped entire pages because the story was just dragging too much and making me bored. I tired very quickly of reading of the girls constant descriptions of clothes and the elaborate parities.
Katrina is probably one of the characters readers are truly able to connect to and Quinn from the beginning. The actions scenes were actually quite well written. There was plenty of action through Katrina, The Beginning. It was fun being able to see how Katrina sees and senses everything with her special gifts. I also enjoyed the scenes where all five girls connect their powers to enhance each other’s gifts.
Katrina, The Beginning was a very interesting read. Full of beauty and elegance along with powerful female characters young girls can look up to. There are some rough edges to the novel but a novel worth giving a chance nonetheless. I look forward to reading the next installment of the Royal Blood Chronicles, I just hope the dialogue and pacing of the novel are far better than the first.

Very good
I liked how she develops the characters, and there is background as the book flows. Katrina is coming into her own and has just discovered she has a twin, she has also fallen in love. While these things are happening there is also evil out there that needs to be beaten.

For teens or young adults but enjoyable to older also. Enjoyed the story, will get the rest of the set. This was a free book and I am glad I picked it up. Thank you for an enjoyable afternoon read.

Poorly constructed plot and too fast paced to the point where it makes no sense whatsoever.
