I did not heed the warnings of other reviewers about this particular Frommer's book, but they were correct. I found the author of this book to be a naive traveler and pretentious writer. While I'm neither a hitchhiking college-age backpacker nor a silver haired Royal Caribbean crusier, I thought the author did a great job of writing descriptions that would keep any traveler from actually meeting and interacting with Turkish people - specifically recommending that travelers only visit the three bars she has listed in the book or stick to their hotel bar. My experiences in Istanbul indicated that using the same common knowledge you'd invoke in Paris, London, New York City or any other big city will keep you safe and let you experience the local culture - something this author did not seem interested in letting you do. I usually like Frommer's but this one is not worth your time.
