This is the third book by Dutch artist and historian Rien Poorvliet I've read so far. Like his other books this one is full of amazing pictures of people, places and animals, from around his home. It is also about the service, WWII and his childhood, along with handwritten explanations that tell a story. Poortvliet shares his Christian faith more in this book than in the other two books, which is a delight. Best of all is a portrait of a musician with the same last name as by maiden name. What fun is that? We may be related. :)

Rien Poortvliet drew and painted beautifully and he pretended to love animals, but in the meantime he killed them, beheaded them, talked disrespectfully about deceased animals and wrote that you can easily throw a dead cat over the bushes; how awful and nauseating !!!

At one point I started to skip pieces and after a while I even only looked at the beautiful illustrations (those of the living animals). This man had a sick fascination with dead animals.

I didn't 'read' this as such because the only copy I could get my hands on was in Dutch, but I really enjoyed and appreciated the art :)

Wonderfully illustrated personal stories, as if from an uncle or grandfather. Some stories and opinions from another time, but I really liked the stories that touched on his ideas of nature, his love for it, and his intimacy with it. It's a lovely book.
