It's hard to rate short stories. Some of the stories drove me nuts. I get judgey with novice dog owners or selfish dog owners or people who willy nilly get a dog that luckily worked out. The sections on old dogs and saying good bye are sweet and sad. I wish more contributers were in the "dog world."

Today is National Dogs’ Day and I find it fitting that I finished reading this book today while puppy-sitting for my two furry, four-legged grandsons. There’re 101 stories from all stages of different dogs’ lives. Some are funny, some have you believing in miracles, and others are just downright sad. Having lost the love of my life, my golden retriever, four years ago, made some of these stories hard to read, yet others brought back wonderful memories.

DNF. I love the chicken soup for the pet lovers soul, but there are a couple different collaborators on that one vs this one and I could really feel the difference. This one I just didn’t connect with the stories, from the guy whose dog had an $800 rug to the lady who always ordered two olives in her martinis after her dog passed. Made it to page 51

Yet another Chicken Soup book written with dog lovers in mind, and this one didn't disappoint. Organizationally, the stories were divided by the stage of life each canine subject was in when the story was written, from bringing home a squirmy puppy, to children growing up with their dogs, to senior canines, to mourning the loss of a best friend. What such organization could cause is a gradual dip in emotions, because puppies are fun and exciting, but reading about people having to put their dogs to sleep is anything but. Therefore, I recommend taking a break between perhaps the senior dog chapter and the stories about the dogs who always die at the end, or even in the middle of the last chapter.
The only story that made me cry though was one written by a single mother who cared for her daughter's dog as the girl went off to college and got married, ingraining the dog so much in the mother's heart that when it came time for her to have the dog put to sleep, she needed her daughter home to go with her to the vet for 'goodbye'. That afternoon, the daughter and her husband, who had many failed attempts to get pregnant, went to the fertility doctor one last time, and found success. I don't know why that story in particular touched my heart, perhaps it's the saying that 'the good Lord giveth and the good Lord taketh away', and that He found a way for a day of great pain to be instead remembered as one of joy.
Stories were all short and to the point. As always, perfect for the gym. One thing I noticed in the appendix was that most of the contributors were previously published writers, which may improve the quality of the book, but does take a little of the 'ordinary people talking about their dogs' feeling away. That said, I didn't notice this during the reading of the book, but it may explain why they always seem to be coming out with a new dog-related Chicken Soup book. I already have a new one to read, though I might wait a little while before starting it, and am open to more.

All of different stories are written in this book fulfill with both happiness and heartbreaking. Dogs make us laugh, cry, and receive love. Even though they are just pets but they can bring change to individual's life.

This book reminded me of my dog I had when I was young. It was such a good "friend" to me at same time part of family member. It always followed anywhere I go as if I a little sibling. Whenever I was with him, I felt all of my day stresses were gone. It licked my hands and cheeks as if it tried to cheer me up from sadness.Unfortunately, I lost it after it sent to my uncle's house. It ran away. It never came back again. My dog had indeed brought a change in my life. I used to be an emotional girl until it came to join my life. Each chapter in this book reminded me of the memorable moment I had with my dog.

I would recommend this book to people who are dog lovers. This book is very touching and emotional.

What you will read in this book is a lot of heartwarming stories of dog adopted from shelters, rescued, protectionists stories and from all ages of dogs, ever since puppies to the hard goodbyes when they go live in a beautiful farm called Dog Heaven.

This is a book for all the dog-persons around, and all the dog-lovers to read, laugh, cry and enjoy.

I'm not done with this yet, and honestly I'm stalling reading the last two chapters. I've never read a Chicken Soup book before, but I've just lost my beloved dog and found myself staring at this book at the store. So far it is wonderful! Nice light reading that you can pick up and put down whenever. Every dog lover needs to read this. Again, the part I need to read the most, about coping with pet loss and saying goodbye, is being held off until I buy more Kleenex, and maybe a bottle of wine!

Some of the stories/vignettes are more interesting than others, but unfortunately none of the writing is "quality." Too bad. This book, while helpful in some respects (especially if one is grieving the loss of a pet or is concerned about the health of a pet, as I am) could have been much better written.

I have loved dogs ever since I was a little kid. The longest amount of time I have gone without having a dog in my life was about one year. I am and always will be a "dog person"!! This book had a whole range of stories- cute, funny, heartwarming and sad.

When I started reading the "Chicken Soup" books, I didn't care too much for books of short stories. I have now read several of these and this one is the best! It's and absolute must read for dog lovers!

Very short stories about our beloved dogs. Great reading just before bed. The only thing I criticize is the amount of the book devoted to dogs passing away. Heartfelt stories but it did get me to thinking. Dogs life are shorter than humans and they really do appreciate the humans. Good book.
