About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Here's the thing--I'm mildly obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, because I think he's one of the most incredible characters ever created. I think Doyle was a genius, though not a perfect one; these later stories of his are a bit of a mixed bag, in that many of them are related secondhand by Watson rather than experienced as such and feel a little flatter as a result. But the final adventure is still so, so good, because the friendship of Holmes and Watson is part of the reason Doyle was a genius.
This audio version was a good companion on a recent road trip of mine. I very much appreciate the violin pieces which separate the stories, though I feel they were used a mite bit too often within the stories themselves. I very much appreciate David Timson's reading style--slow and clipped, as Holmes himself could be--but I occasionally had trouble differentiating his Holmes from his Watson, which isn't good.
So overall, a good rendering of the last few Holmes stories (of the first go-round, at least) for taking along with you when you can't read them yourself.

How did he write such crisp details and spin such puzzling puzzles? I enjoyed every moment of this read because I felt like I was experiencing a realm of literature set apart from the rest - to this day.

The movie "Sahara" comes to mind as a modern adaptation of the mystery-solving, good-natured, hero/sidekick duo triumphing over evil with knowledge and the power of observation.

Faithful unabridged readings of the original ACD Holmes stories.
These four ended with The Final Problem when ACD, fed up with his Great Detective and the attention his crime stories he was receiving were overshadowing the author's more 'worthy' historical works, decided to kill Sherlock off.
All done in the best high Victorian manner, and actually still quite moving.
Of course, by 1901, ACD found that killing his hero off only made the reading public more keen on the poor man, so bought him back in 'The Empty House' much to the surprise of Watson and the consternation of the Criminal Fraternity of London and beyond.

Do the Sherlock Holmes stories have flaws? Of course. But do I love them anyway? Undoubtedly. I'm not going to focus on the flaws here, because frankly I just don't care about them. No one will ever be able to convince me that Sherlock Holmes isn't one of the greatest characters in fiction, with some of the most exciting and entertaining stories ever written.

This audiobook includes The Adventure of the 'Gloria Scott', The Adventure of the Resident Patient, The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor, and the heartbreaking The Adventure of the Final Problem. The last is my favorite in this part of the book, but the others were entertaining and, I'm not ashamed to admit, made me flap my arms nerdily. I've read these stories before and enjoyed quoting the bits I'd memorized with the narrator. These stories are so delightful for a reread.

The narrator, David Timson, was absolutely amazing. He did a remarkable Holmes, and was very good as the other characters. He sounded like they ought to sound, and inflected his voice to avoid that monotone so common amongst audiobooks. I was only going to listen to this one, which had some of my favorite stories on it, but now I feel inclined to listen to his narration of the other stories in the book. Excuse my excited ranting. This was just so great.

Out of the four Sherlock Holmes stories featured in this collection, two were ones that I was already familiar with, while the other two were stories I hadn't previously read. The Adventure of the Final Problem is of course a classic, and is well-known to Holmes aficionados. But it had been a while since I'd read it, so I still found enough in the story to engage me without any over-familiarity with the plot spoiling the experience. As for the other three stories, the one I'd read before isn't a favorite of mine among Holmes' adventures. And the two stories that were new to me focused more on backstory and exposition than on Holmes and his detective work. While I wouldn't go so far as to call this collection disappointing, I personally wouldn't rank most of the featured stories as top tier for the author either. The book was enjoyable, but giving it more praise than that might be over-selling it in my opinion.
Did I like it? Yes.
Would I reread it? Probably not.
Would I recommend it? I think it's a worthwhile endeavor for fans of mysteries, fans of the classics, and fans of the time period in which Arthur Conan Doyle wrote to read all of the original Sherlock Holmes stories at least once.

Holmes takes kinder to the short form, I think. I found most of these stories far more enjoyable than the Sign of Four, and the Utah tangent in a Study in Scarlet. Too many lit and workshopping classes made me pick the thing apart while I was listening to it. It's fascinating how the short story conventions have changed, but stayed the same. I'd love to know how many of Sherlock's feelings are Conan Doyle's, such as Sherlock's belief that one day soon their rulers and ministers would crumble and the US and the England would be a united country. I think my favorite of the stories in here has to be A Scandal in Bohemia. But even with as little screen time as she gets, Irene Adler is a wonderful character. The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle was also very good. The Adventure of the Red-Headed League made me laugh the most. None of these stories were bad, but some certainly stood out more than others.

If you're interested in what I thought while reading the individual stories, I suggest you read my status updates - this review won't contain it, as I've already stated everything that I feel is important to say.

For the most part, these stories are no more than decent. I thought that I was in love with everything Sherlock Holmes, but I think that I actually enjoy the recreation of this character into our modern ideology of him. I think that Doyle was a poor writer, and while talking it over with S, and him saying that Doyle wrote mostly while drunk, I have to agree that that makes sense. I'm happy that I can say that I've read this classic, but I retain the philosophy that the only real way to stay in love with classics are to not read them.

I found this collection of short stories quite a bit predictable. I have only read 4 stories, but I am not interested to read more. I didn’t like Sherlock Holmes very much at all. He was know-it-all individual who had a very small opinion of everyone else. I would like to see more action and less of Sherlock Homes.

Four excellent short stories of the adventures of the World's Greatest Detective, including "The Final Problem" and Holmes' battle of wits and strength with his arch-nemesis Moriarty. Excellent narration by David Timson who does all the voices so well.
