Lord Lightning by Jenny Brown became one of those rare books, that after finishing it, I quickly re-read it again, in hopes of unraveling more of the story. While not complex, the story was rich and deep with characters that slowly unravel themselves before the reader’s eyes. They have layers and masks they wear in order to hide themselves away from the hurts they suffered in the world. I became so engrossed with the story that at times it was hard to walk away without wanting to run back and re ...more

I was really looking forward to this book, because my Goodreads friends whose taste are very similar to mine enjoyed it. For some reason, it just did not do anything for me and I read very quickly / skimmed through most of it after the first 100 pages. I felt like there were a few times where if things had been done differently then I could have liked it, but in the end the whole of it didn't click with me.

Both the hero and heroine were very interesting at the beginning and I was quickly pulled

Recommends it for: Intelligent Romances
Yes, I know, another romance novel but one with a surprising cast of characters that are not your typical romance stereotypes.

Sure, you have to have your penniless/innocent heroine from the early 1800s but she is far from the "twist-your-ankle"/"help me!" damsel in distress that usually turns my head in disgust. When her good for nothing father suddenly appears in her life and then just as quickly spends the rest of her small dowry before being thrown into a debtors prison, Eliza Farrell sucks

Although this book will not appear in print for another three months, I had the fortune of reading it in manuscript form a couple years ago. I'm very glad to see it coming out, although I'm disappointed with the cover they saddled it with (go to Amazon and see what I mean). The following is an excerpt from my initial feedback to the author:

Telling fortunes seems very much in keeping with what I imagine of the era in which this is set. And the idea of accuracy in such things will surely provoke i

This book had a lot of potential, but I feel that, with the way the author presented everything, she took away most of the magic the book would have had otherwise.

First of all, I didn't like that the astrology aspect was presented in such a mathematical way.

I know there is a lot of science to it, but I wish things had been a lot more mystical and spiritual.

Also, I must say that, apart from my hatred for Edward's mother, I didn't feel anything strongly. Nothing just wowed me, like I expect to ha

I love the way this book interweaves romance, history, and astrology. The heroine is resourceful without being super-powered, and the hero is both dangerous and thoughtful. The interactions between them just zing from the first to the end, as Lord Lightning is alternately admiring and appalled of his new "mistress's" lack of artifice.

This a great "meaty" historical romance!

It was ok. Too Much Sex. And very silly descriptions. I mean, come on. Luxuriant orbs? Twirling nipples?

Jenny Brown gets 4 STARS for her terrific Regency Historical Romance, Lord Lightning. It is a wonderful introspective by Lord Lightning as to his inner character as compared to Eliza's. (Which he compares always to other women, first.) Going on it also is a wonderful introspective by Eliza as to her inner character as compared to Edward's. (Comparing herself to her mother when she was young.) Then together they were compared to the books on which the horosco

I really enjoyed the Lord Lightning character, and the themes of truth/secrecy and games/love running through the story line. I came onto this book through the "modern" Lord Lightning in the "Struck by Lightning" series which was published more recently.

I want to start out by saying I didn't hate this book. 30 pages in, I was hating it and feeling mighty bummed out because I've just had some crappy luck with books for 2012. But I kept reading, and somehow, this odd historical kinda grew on me.

That said, it also makes me kind of want to give up reviewing books, period. I honestly don't know wtf to think about Lord Lightning. I almost didn't know how to grade it. I sure as hell don't know how to describe it. And I can't even tell you if I mean t
Eliza Farrell is a astrologer and fortune teller, after her latest client kicks her to the curb without payment she finds her self abducted by the infamous Lord Lighting(aka Lord Heartwood or Edward). When Eliza's latest star reading results in a breakup between Edward and his Mistress he decides that Eliza will have to step up and take the roll of his mistress and take her place on his trip to visit with his mother. Once they come to a suitable agreement they set off for a two week stay at his ...more
This was a fun and interesting read. I'm so glad that I took a chance on it after I saw it reviewed. Eliza is a great female lead. She's sweet and innocent but she also has determination and daring going for her. Lord Hartwood is not easy to get along with but she goes toe to toe with him, repeatedly. The twists and turns in this story make it interesting. Lord Lightning feels that he is just fulfilling the destiny laid out for him by his father but as he deals with his mother, he learns things ...more

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

This was an enjoyable book with a unique take on the historical romance.
hot as a firecracker
Funny ... Although I don't know if it was intentional ( hero's name HARTwood lol... Maybe I've just been reading too many smutty novels) ...anyway it has a slow start but it grew on me.

“Lord Lightning” was a snoozer. The first chapter was good but after that, it went downhill for me.

This book is a 3.5, it's pretty sweet but it doesn't run to my heart pounding, ultra sexy, stud muffin I like. My first read by Jenny Brown, I'd give her another go.

Years later, her favorite hobby continues to be reading biographies of people who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. She has earned her living in many different ways: performing as a singer-songwriter in Western Massachusetts and Nashville, writin ...more
