The Kaleidoscope of Death is such a different story of any stories I've read. I loved the world building and I loved main characters. I thrashed, cried, laughed and the ending made me happy. Had a lot of badly written female side characters, but also had nicely written the more important ones. Some characters felt not made out yet, like Ruan Nanzhu himseIf, but maybe that's the point. I don't think I am forgetting this book any time soon. Would recommend.

soooo funfact i don't know which volume of Kaleidoscope of Death this is but i'm using this as a placeholder entry for my review for the webnovel because how could i not need to scream about this after finishing??? oh my god?? (lots and lot of soilers i won't be sorry for)

i fear my brain had exploded. i talked about the first three doors in vol 1— the coffin, the triplets' birthday and the human skin drum. but omg my god the difficulty of the doors really really ramps up later on and it's so fun and just riveting to see how it plays out. i love how the characters in each door mostly get fleshed out and i do find myself rooting for some of them from time to time, though mostly i loved figuring out the sus characters.

my favourite one to read so far is probably Liang Miye and Lin Qiushi's tenth door, the Hako Onna game. i actually enjoyed reading the game lore and mechanics and seeing how there's not one but two moles!! working behind the scsnes with the Hako Onna. not talking about the final door (getting to that later), this is probably the most emotionally charged one for Ruan Nanzhu and Lin Qiushi because this is the first time it really looks like RNZ is not going to make it despite seeming to invincinle right up till then. LQS finding out they've been betrayed again and being separated by a door while trying to save RNZ was absolutely painful to read. their first 'i love you's being said under duress HURT. still, i am so fucking glas RNZ survived because i would have rioted.

honorable mention to the Woman in the Rain door and the Slenderman door as well because those were atmospheric and creepy as shit to read. reading the Slenderman door arc at night was not a good idea and now top hats scare me.

okay i can't not talk about RNZ and LQS because i hardly see the flirt x exasperated trope nowadays but they remind me how much this was the OG trope that got me into romance ever when i was still in school. but i loved the way their relationship is revealed to be so much deeper than flirting because there's always an underlying, almost blind trust that they have in each other in or out of the door. sure there is always an arc where something happens and they get distant because someone (ahem RNZ) doesn't want LQS to like him and suffer when he dies. very very glad it was not dragged out and good god i love how tender their relationship is despite the constant flirting.

the eleventh (actually twelth) door started underwhelming but i love how it turned into a character study of their relationship. the part where they question if the reality they know with each other's existence is real, or whether they have already died and everything is made up was actually legit and i felt that. the whole part where they can only meet during the ever shortening nights to run from monsters together, the nights getting shorter until eventually ending actually brought me close to tears. because even if in danger, they only want to be together, and their last wish is to die together. the way something so simple suddenly because so difficult after going through so much had me tearing up.

" but you're not there. Lin Qiushi, don't you get it? any world without you is false! "

" i'm so glad to have met you. i'm not scared of those things at all, not anymore. "

" what ought to be terrifying evenings, because of Ruan Nanzhu's very existence, became something to look forward to.

Lin Quishi finally understood that phrase, that to love someone was to gain both the soft cartilage and the armor that protected it.

they had finally become each other's most dependable backing. "

and also, just the parallels between the relationship of LQS and RNZ with that of LQS and Chestnut (his cat) never fail to make me laugh.

another thing i gotta commend this series on is the huge cast of supporting characters that i actually came to care so much about.

Wu Qi didn't play a big part in the bigger plot, but he's the one first who stuck with LQS from before the doors and kept caring about his wellbeing until his untimely end. i hate that he was tricked into taking his own life for access to the doors (it didn't work) and how gutting this feels reading LQS and RNZ tricking the ones responsible into horrible deaths in the doors.

i thought Tan Zaozao was gonna be an annoying brat who dies quickly in the first door they meet her in, and i'm so surprised to see that she actually makes a comeback and has character development?? she just wanted to get through the doors, and seeing her blossoming friendship with the Obsidion members is actually heartwarming, especially how she cares for LQS and her shooting the shit with Cheng Qianli. even in death she still protected him in his final door.

and of course the twins Cheng Qianli and Yixie. i thought seeing CYZ arguing with RNZ and keeping his hints secret and only taking his brother with him were major death flags. but god i was WRONGGG. it was CQL and when they came back from the tenth door and it was CQL bleeding out, i actually sobbed. because he's just a kid who looks up to his brother and wants to live and get better at dealing with ghosts and horror movies and be smarter. the way CYX declines after and how everyone is affected by the grief absolutely killed me because i felt it too. and then in the twins extra where we see how much CYX actually lives his brother despite constantly telling him off..... cue the waterworks again....... i'm happy to see that CYX made it to the final door and i 100% understand him choosing the illusory world instead of reality because his brother is there alive and well. ahhhh i'm crying again.

okay now to talk about that extra. yaknow, the one where it's revealed after RNZ comes home to LQS a year later and they finally have their happy ending, that he's THE TWELFTH DOOR??? it blew my mind but why wasn't this included in the main story? this and the whole story of him as a gardener and Lin Qiushi as a rose. the whole thing where Lin Qiushi was the real leader of Obsidion and had gone through eleven doors and the start of the story we see is his journey through the twelfth door??? the fact that Ruan Nanzhu wasn't originally a person at all?? well. Lin Qiushi is freaky enough to accept his lover as some sentient door god and not question it so. good for him, honestly.

(though i wouldn't have minded seeing more psychological horror death games.....)

i'm gonna end up watching spirealm soon aren't i.......

I’m absolutely obsessed with kaleidoscope of death. I have no idea how I finished it so quickly but here I am 😭. I loved their relationship so much like the slow burn of it all had me on the edge of my seat. Lin Qiushi my beloved <3, I get Ruan Nanzhu’s obsession with him honestly. It managed to be heartbreaking at times and yet also so funny.

I WAS ACTUALLY DYING DURING THE LAST ARC
MY ANXIETY CANNOT DO THIS

full review to come ~

but that last four chapters - door 11?! during the last night i was almost crying. at first i was going to rate it 3.5 due to how abrupt the beginning was but after the halfway point it's definitely 4-4.5 stars.
