I must admit, I have become a fan of this talented author since I reviewed his first novel in this series Sunrise at Sunset in December. I have been waiting for the second, A Bloody London Sunset release, and I cannot say this book was anything other than what I EXPECT from Jaz Primo.
The opening premise of book #1, is that our vampire called Amber, became dissatisfied with life and planned to ‘journey into the sun’. She pulled her car over to an open field, and got out lying in a meadow, awaiting the sunrise. As she began to burn, she changed her mind and fled to the closest building, a garage containing an old car with a tarp over it that she can hide under, away from the light. An eight year old little boy named Caleb wanders into the building and our story began. During their meeting, Caleb helped her and in doing so incurred the wrath of his abusive, drunken father, who then prepared to beat him. Amber killed Caleb’s father, snapping his neck in front of the child, and then hypnotized Caleb to forget the event.
The story of a strong female alpha falling in love with a human changes the feel of a story so much. It is so different from what we have been reading for the last few years with the strong male alpha stories. Katrina Rawlings is Amber’s new persona. Twenty years later, her obsession with Caleb continues. He is now a professor of American History at a small college in Atlanta. They meet again (not by chance) and fall in love.
Our second book, Bloody London Sunset, continues with Caleb and Katrina, along with the other members we had met in the first story. Alton, Katrina’s mentor, Paige, another Alpha Vampire, and Kat’s best friend. We still find Kat is continually obsessed with the care and safety of her human lover. Their relationship is growing into a very loving and comfortable relationship. Caleb is still trying to grow physically stronger for her to allay her fears for him to be alone with no protection. He also does not want to be a financial burden for her, as his good nature will not allow him to take advantage of the wealth she has amassed in over 500 years. Alton has invited them to London for Spring Break, and they are looking forward towards the trip.
Caleb has instigated a new game for them to play called ‘Find Caleb’. His wish is to have Kat continue to use her hunting instincts and keep those instincts sharp. Unfortunately, Caleb chooses a place to hide in the middle of a National Forest, where he bumps into a hungry vampire. He is almost killed, and he starts having flashbacks about something in his past. Katrina realizes he is remembering. Caleb unexpectedly comes upon a picture while rummaging through one of his storage boxes in the garage. It is one of his mother winning an award with her boss standing next to her, a brown haired woman he knew as Amber 20 years ago, and his Katrina.
Love never runs smoothly, and how could it with this deception and lie between them? Caleb is angry that Kat did not kill the male vampire who tried to have him for dinner, and now he has to digest this. I saw other reviewers see Caleb as a wimp and very passive for a man. I see him as a very strong man, growing into the strange world of vampires who believe humans are on the bottom of the food chain. Katrina watches as he grows in speed, strength and thought. He now realizes Katrina and he did not meet by accident on campus, but cannot remember all that happened when he was a boy. Katrina has to face the sin of omission she has perpetrated. Can their love withstand this? All thru this book you can see the un- wavering love these two have for each other. From the start, their love and caring grows stronger every day.
The trip to London becomes a grand adventure between sight-seeing, murder and intrigue. Back in the states, Paige has some thinking to do as the alpha/vampire in charge of Caleb’s protection. Somehow ‘big sister’ is not where her feelings are leaning, and she must come to terms with them.
You can see Mr. Primo is setting the stage for his third novel Summit at Sunset. A telling thought that Katrina verbalizes mentally is that ‘Caleb would make a great vampire.’ Originally that was not even in the equation. Will this happen? Alton is planning another meeting in London. Vampire business is heating up. I want to be there. Don’t you?
A Bloody London Sunset is book two in Jaz Primo’s Sunset Vampire series, and continues the story of alpha vampire Katrina Rawlings and her human mate Caleb Taylor. This book begins where the first, Sunrise at Sunset, left off. Katrina and Caleb have defeated Chimalma; unfortunately this has left Caleb with nightmares and Katina with a wish to do more hunting. London vampire Alton has given Caleb advice on dealing with Katrina’s newly reawakened urges, and Paige also comes back to Atlanta for a visit.
Katrina and Caleb have been dating for several months now, and while they may have had a few disagreements they are still going strong. Caleb is not just another boyfriend for Katrina, he is her mate. Katrina learns to cook in order to do something nice for Caleb. She hasn’t cooked for centuries, but she wants to be able to surprise him with the unexpected. This may not sound like much, but remember, she’s a vampire and the smell of food cooking can be a very unpleasant experience for them.
Katrina’s view on Caleb’s love: “For all of her strength, determination, aggression, and power, she was like a fragile rose before his needs and desires. It was a vulnerable feeling and one that as an alpha vampire she wasn’t accustomed to. And yet she embraced it deeply within herself and held onto it as if it were the very source of her life force.” (Kindle location 455, Page 27)
Caleb’s view on Katrina’s love: “Katrina makes me feel loved, protected, and encouraged. She’s someone who’s willing to accept me just as I am without condition. And I feel desired and needed by her...’My relationship with Katrina is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’m completely in love with her.’” (Kindle location 671, Page 40)
Katrina and Caleb’s relationship is not the only thing growing and expanding in this book. Caleb is starting to become a stronger individual who is much more capable of taking care of himself. Not that he can stand up to vampires completely yet, but he can now hold his own against some mere humans. It will be interesting to see if Caleb’s “transformation” will lead into a much greater transformation into that of a vampire. Several hints were placed throughout the story that he already shows great promise at becoming a strong vampire himself.
Vampire politics start to come into play more in this book as well. Katrina and Caleb make a trip to London to visit Alton, and what begins as a spring break vacation ends up being a little more than any of them bargained for. The events that occur in London will play a major role in the next book in the series, Summit at Sunset. Alton is trying to bring the vampires together in a European summit, and I have a feeling that things will not go as smoothly as planned.
Overall, I think this was a nice, solid addition to the series. I can’t wait to see how things are going to develop with Katrina, Caleb, Paige, and Alton. It ought to be interesting to see how vampires come together during the summit, and what kind of vampires we’ll be introduced to. I also hope to see Caleb grow even more. He’s already developed so much over two novels, that I can imagine we’ll start seeing even more out of him in the next book. I also hope there’s even more of Paige. Her spunky self is still my favorite character, and I love it whenever she’s in a scene.
If you enjoyed book one, I definitely think you’ll enjoy book two and wind up looking forward to the next one. A Bloody London Sunset was an enjoyable read, and one that I would recommend to others.
Firstly I would like to thank Jaz for sending me a signed copy of his book. Like the first in the series, A Bloody London Sunset has a lovely front cover and the book feels nice to hold.
Katrina and Caleb’s relationship continues to be strong, I really like what Caleb said to Tanisha when he was defending their relationship to her.... ’There’s usually more to a couples relationship than what’s presented to the outside world. There is always something that’s only known between just those two people. What’s important is that a couple arrives at mutually agreeable terms for the structure of their relationship.’.... That is such a deep and meaningful statement and so true I loved it!
I could totally sympathise with Caleb when he found out Katrina had actually been in is life since he was a child but had made him forget, but I could also understand why she had done it…….it was one of those really hard situations where you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t! The only way for them to move on properly was to do everything possible to bring back his memory; and it turned out well when he did.
I am totally liking this new stronger Caleb, I felt in the first book he was a bit of a wimp but he has managed to shake off that image with his new fighting skills which makes him a better match for the over controlling Katrina (who I don't like very much!)
The story flows well and runs at a steady pace, there is action & intrigue, romance & love and enough suspense to keep you turning the pages right to the very last one.
I received the book from the author. Nothing was promised nor was there any payment for the review. The review is my honest opinion. This is book 2 in the Sunset Vampire Series. This book continues the saga of alpha vampire Katrina and her human mate Caleb, who we first met in Sunrise at Sunset. This book picks up a few months after the defeat of vampire enemy Chimalma. Katrina and Caleb are back home in Atlanta. Alton is in London and Paige has returned to California. Things have not settled down for the two though. Their battle with Chimalma has marked them. They are having trouble connecting in their relationship. Caleb seeks advice from Alton. Paige feeling the strain between the two returns to Atlanta to help, bringing a human with her. As if that is not enough to deal with vampires are turning up unexpectedly. A trip to London not only brings Caleb’s memories to the front but also brings in vampire politics and more danger. I enjoyed reading A Bloody London Sunset. Katrina is still dominant but we see the softer side where Caleb, and even Paige, is concerned. Caleb is getting stronger. This was welcome to see. With someone as strong as Katrina it would be easy to make him wimpy. It is going to be interesting to watch his growth. There were several hints of Caleb one day making a strong vampire. It will be exciting to see if and how this transpires. There is action and intrigue in this book. The action is intense. However I had the feeling this book was more a building of and establishing relationships between vampires and vampire to Caleb. It seemed to be laying the foundation for book 3, Summit at Sunset. Vampire politics will come more into play and we will need this foundation. I really enjoy this series. It is refreshing to have the dominant vampire be a female. A woman who can handle things on her own and does not mind saying so. Caleb’s acceptance of this could have made him weak but the author makes a point of making Caleb strong in his own right. This brings a unique and fresh storyline to a popular genre. The one drawback for me was the over use of smirk. About halfway through the book I was tired of it. I don’t believe this will continue to be a problem because I have noticed the excellent thing about Jaz Primo is that he improves his writing. In reading his first and second books you can see his growth as a writer. I am positive this will continue making each book he writes better than the last.
A huge thanks to Jaz for allowing me to review his second novel. I truely loved Sunrise at Sunset and was really excited when I finally got this through my door. I could have kissed my postman. And I was not disappointed at all.
Set just a little after the events in book 1 we see Kat and Caleb trying to get their lives back on track. However, soon Caleb discovers the secrets that Kat has been hiding and he is finding life even harder to trust. With the help of Paige though they soon patch things up and escape to England. Things seem to be working out great for our couple but not is all as they appear in England and soon they find themselves in danger yet again.
So its no secret how much I love this first book and its mainly due to the wonderful strong characters. Kat is a strong willed bad assed Alpha Vampires, yet she seems to have softened a little more from the previous novel. Caleb, who was quite shy in the first book has really grown. He is more out going and just an overall stronger character. The two of them together is just wonderful. They are made for each other. Clearly in love and yet its not an overally romantic, sickly kind of love. Even when they are fighting they still adore each other. The big plus for me was the return of the favourite character, Paige Turner (and yes that still makes me giggle) I just love Paige. She is so cute and yet kind of scary. Her and Caleb's friendship is very interesting and they way they act around each other is sometimes so playful and sweet its almost childlike.
A Blood London Sunset is the kind of story that you can just lose yourself in. Its action packed and full of suspense and witty banter that its hard not to drawn into it. Even though the title is suggests that its going to mainly set in London, don't get to see London until about two thirds of a way in. Although I was so enchanted with the story that I honestly didn't even notice because Jaz has a way to building up and story and then just BAM the main event just hits you and its just plain awesome!!
If you love your urban fantasy with a fast paced, action packed story then please read this series. And support Jaz who is a wonderful and talent Indie author.
This is the second book in Jaz's vampire series, and I must admit it is quite fascinating. He has done a complete role-reversal in the male-female normal vampire relationship that we as a reader have come to expect. Hats off to that Jaz. I love books that widen the scope of things. So we have Katrina, who is a major alpha vamp. As I stated before, Katrina could never have an alpha as a mate. She is much too dominate and I could see her easily killing another male that constantly challenged her. The relationship between Caleb and Katrina works because Caleb allows Katrina to be herself, and doesn't try to rein in her dominate tendencies. But life isn't a bowl of cherries and many conflicts and sticky situations arise in this book.
Paige is a rising alpha in her own rite. But Caleb has managed to get under her skin with his charm and understanding. Paige has come to have deep feelings for Caleb and they make her quite uncomfortable. She has much soul-searching to do. Will these feelings end up costing her the people she cares for the most?
Caleb is like a beacon that attracts trouble, envy, and awe. There is something about him that stirs emotions in these predatory beasts, that both surprises and shocks the masses. It seems to me the author is building Caleb up to fulfill a great role. I am anxious to dive in the third book and discover if I am right. This was an excellent sequel with several more interesting characters added in to the scene. My favorite is still Katrina. I really think the author has captured the essence of what a true alpha-female would be like. Nicely done Jaz!!
When it comes to prologues Jaz never lets me down. I am always fascinated with them. In the first book the prologue had a vampire that almost commits suicide and in the second one there is a recap of a previous fight with blood and a rolling head. Yes, blood and gore captures me.
In A Bloody London Sunset we are thrown back into Caleb and Kat’s romance. Kat is still feeling guilty and refuses to feed from Caleb because of her accidental attack towards him. Caleb is trying to come up with a way for them to become closer and give her alpha vampire side some fun.
Caleb comes up with the wonderful game of Find Caleb. Which I love. Everything works out well and they both enjoy it until one night while playing another vampire attacks. Needless to say that did not go over well with Kat.
Are favorite friends are back including my favorite Paige Turner. I love her. She is scary and funny all in one package. I also love how she looks out for Caleb. Their relationship is very cute. The only problem is, is that Paige has more then friendly feelings for Caleb and needs to come to terms that there will be nothing but a friendship.
Back to the main characters. They take a trip to London and then the adventure begins. Lies, fighting, mistrust, and murder. What more could you ask for?
I can’t wait for the next book! Will Caleb become a vampire? What will happen with him and Kat? What will happen with Kat, Caleb, and Paige? Will we meet other Vamps? So many questions!
Jaz has an excellent way of giving his readers an in depth look into his characters. He has a wonderful way of including all of the back story without being overly descriptive. He doesn't bore his audience with his descriptiveness and I love that about him.
I love the story between Caleb and Kat. The unique relationship they have has everyone in the vampire community amazed. I found that Kat wasn't as evident in book 2 as she was in book 1. She is a strong character but I thought that she had taken a bit of a back burner in book 2. Unlike Caleb and Paige who I found were more developed and stronger in this book.
A Bloody London Sunset is a page turner that leaves you wanting more of this great Urban Fantasy. A vampire story that all readers of this great genre can enjoy. A Bloody London Sunset wasn't as action pact as Sunrise At Sunset but I thought it was great because it gave a closer look into the nature of his characters while leaving a great introduction into book 3.
Jaz has an incredible way of captivating me and keeping me hooked. Jaz is an amazing author with a great writing style and i will always look forward to his work. A great read and a series that all Paranormal and Urban Fantasy fans should have on their shelves.

This is the second book in the Sunset Vampires series ..you really need to have read the first. Katrina ,an Alpha Vampire and Caleb her human mate ..strive to make their relationship work ...Katrinas over protectiveness is a cause for concern . Caleb, really comes into his own in this book ,the first book he came across as weedy and nerdy ! Paige, a long time friend of Katrinas and a vampire ,is Calebs babysitter ,her relationship with Caleb in this book seemed a little off ..I'm sure if Caleb did not belong to Kat ,then Paige would be right in there !
Without giving away the plot ...Kat divulges information to Caleb about his past and opens a whole can of worms...
Caleb and Kats adventures from Book one have other Vamps very interested in them both ...we meet both old and new characters, Alton..still can't work him out ...his suggestions to Caleb appear to invite danger ...
I was a little disappointed that they didn't get to London quicker ..my Britishness!!! One minor snitch ..the cover art totally dispells my image of Kat and Caleb .....
Jaz Primo has done it again. It was so awesome to get back in touch with Caleb and Paige...Katrina too. hehe I gotta say that this book will keep you on your toes. You can easily fall into a routine as if they were your neighbors, just passing by for a late night, night cap. With kick. I loved how Alton gave Caleb his great advice to spice up his relationship with Katrina, it had me entertained as much as Katrina was. I found myself wanting to play along with his 'Find Caleb' game. Caleb changes into this gutsy and stronger person and I have to say I really dug this newer improved mega Caleb. Theres a lot of twist and turns and I didn't think they were going to make it through, but they did and that just shows how they, as in Katrina and Caleb were meant for each other. Paige ... better luck next time. lol Awesome book! Easy read and impatiently waiting on the next. *snapping fingers and staring at my watch grinning* :)
I thoroughly enjoyed writing this novel! The continuing development of the main characters on their own personal journeys of self-discovery was refreshing for me, and it led me easily into the material (storyline, character development, etc.) for the next novel. Each character’s personal growth seems realistic to me, versus being contrived or forced merely for developing a story. In the end, my personal hope is that readers further embrace characters that they may not have liked as well from the first novel, while also appreciating the advancement and development of those characters that they enjoyed. - Jaz Primo (4-28-2011)
I love this series! Katrina is my favorite female vampire ever. Caleb is growing in strength and more in love with Katrina. Paige is becomung one of my favorite characters. She is a vamp that I could see fun to hang with, would always have your back, and just needs a hug sometimes. Well and some blood as well.I love everything about this book and think Jaz Primo is a master at writing. I look forward to reading the next book in the series it can't come out soon enough for me. Awesome job Jaz keep it up you are becoming one of my favorite authors. When my friends ask for a vampire book I tell them about The Sunset Vampire series.
A Bloody London Sunset is book two in the Sunset Vampires series.I enjoyed it just as much if not more than book 1 of the series. Jaz Primo added more layers to each of the characters.I loved the fact that a good part of the book took place in London because that is a place I've always wanted to visit and I was transported there through the book. I am counting down the days until the release of book 3 in the Sunset Vampires series which I will bet anything that it will be equally as thrilling and attention grabbing as Sunrise at Sunset and A Bloody London Sunset.
The Sunset Vampire Series is terrific! As if the 1st book in this series wasn't good...this one just outdid it x 2!! This book is a mixture of everything I love! It's action packed with plenty of romance, comedy, friendship, & paranormal goodness!!!! I have thoroughly enjoyed tagging along on this wonderful journey with Kat & Caleb! The bonds they're forming with new friends & old are intriguing, & I look forward to reading the 3rd book to see how they shall play out. Just do it...You will NOT regret this buy! ;•}
I believe this was a fun read! I like that Paige took on more of a main character role. However, I feel like Caleb is kind of a pansy. Katrina is a bad ass and Caleb just falls in line...we know who wears the pants! It would be nice to see Caleb "man" up! Other than that, it was Fantastic!!!
Really enjoy how the story is developing. Each character is revealing more about their history and growing. Difficult relationship details are being smoothed over. The travel adds to the complexity and suspense of what will come next.
I enjoyed the frist book in this series much better. I took weeks to finish this story. I usually finish a book in 24 hours.
There wasn't one thing that I can put my finger on and say, "that was bad." It is always nice to revisit ond friends from previous books. You expect them to grow and change as they develope. I'm afraid that Kat is more and more turning into a woman I'd tell any guy to run from.
Kat's controling behavior towards Caleb comes to close to being abusive in my view. I couldn't help thinking of Caleb as such a wimp that he allows here to boss him around as harshly as she does.
The plot left me wanting this time around also. I kept waiting for something big to happen and it never did. It made the book seem like a "filler" while we wait for the next book.
