A delightful book. Gentle stories where good triumphs over evil, with nice characters and interesting escapades along the way. Also beautifully illustrated.
This is what happens when you read a story to a child, trying to get the wee barbarian to settle down and go sleepies ... and wind up sneaking off to the online stores where old books routinely change hands, to get a copy for yourself! The volume I'm actually referring to here is King of the Nogs ... published in 1968 by Kaye and Ward Ltd., and -- hee hee! I got a copy of the little hardcover, all 48pp of spot-color cartoon-style sketches, in smart red binding, dust jacket missing.
I have the haziest memory of this story being read to me when I was about four, but the next time I saw a copy was on the shelf at Jade and Dave's place (waving -- hi, guys!!), and then again, a much later edition, when I was asked by mind a hyperactive mini-hooligan (shivers). You have to love Noggin for its own sake ... and then love it all over again when you see the timeless enchantment in the eyes of a child. Unreservedly five stars.
I have had it for a very long time, (it's older than me) and it is so nice to come back to it having forgotten the stories. 4 Stars for the tales themselves, but because Postgate and Firmin are such a good team it gets to 5 Stars with the illustrations too.
