“Made In Canada: 101 Amazing Achievements” is a 2003 book that I have had for a little while. I expected to enjoy it but it thrilled me with pride. It dawned on me that what I know of our country’s innovation largely relates to the arts. I can tell you all about authors, singers, and actors but my goodness, do we ever have greater input in the world than that. I am excited to share this and recommend it to anyone, including fellow citizens, who want to know the breadth and scope of what we contribute. It is dismaying that some inventors are not known or paid for their products.

This wonderful creativity tour by Beverley Spencer starts with entertainment and I recognize or own every board game it mentioned: because they are Canadian! “Balderdash” is close enough for libel to a game Ellen DeGeneres recently endorsed, called ”Psyche” and I have seen “Pictionary” played on “The Big Bang Theory”. I did not know we authored Superman’s story and that actress, Margot Kidder is Canadian. It figures that we invented snowmobiles but it is touching that losing a sick child in a storm galvanized it. I am astounded and proud that we made a tool to suck oil spills out of oceans. Our first telegrams over water made fast international communication possible.

Our value goes far, to important medicine and science. Thanks to us, baby bottles have liners that can be changed: hygiene without requiring any boiling. In an emergency, hospitals can evacuate several babies in one comfortable carrier. Beverley tells these great stories in organized categories. This book is so good, my spouse, Ron wants to read it too. I won’t describe any more and will let you find and read this! Happy Canada Day on July 1st, everyone!
