A collection of full-color walking guides journeys to some of the world's greatest cities to take readers on twenty-four themed walking tours through diverse areas of each city, highlighting important landmarks, off-the-beaten path attractions, historic sites, and local features with easy-to-follow maps, clear route directions, anecdotes, and first-person commentary.
Peter and Oriel Caine run Paris Walks, a company that gives walking tours of Paris in English. They are both qualified guide lecturers. Peter has a degree in history and art history and Oriel has a master's degree in history and French literature.
I was hooked by chapter titles worthy of mystery novels: Days of Plague in the Borgo, The Devil's District, Death at Every Turn, Skulduggery on the Docks.
On a lighter note: Peaceful Places of the Aventine, Divine Esquiline, Stepping up in Style.
Rome offers something for everyone, so wandering its streets and neighborhoods is always an adventure.
Fun travel book, but for me, I have a list of "must-see" places and it would talk too many of the walks to see it all and I wouldn't have time because of the extra sights. The walks are very cool though, the theming is something neat and different. A few examples are: Rogues and Rascals, Luxury and Bare Bones, & Escape to the Catacombs.
Wonderful photography! Check the edges of the pages to find out what the photographs are on the opposite pages. This guide covers some places not to be missed that are off the beaten path. It also provides descriptive paragraphs rather than the usual two or three sentences in most guidebooks.
This is a GREAT way to see various cool things in ROme, and includes restaurants in the neighborhood of each walk, as well as how to get to the start of the walk via public transportation, and how to get out.
Excellent book. Lightweight. Plan to take it on the road with me. Only criticism is there is not much data or description about the sights. Feel like I need a companion guide. But if the book were all encompassing it would be too heavy. I'm not a fan of ebooks but that's one option.
