This edition is out of print.

As a fire fighter, Justin has learned the hard way that bad things always seem to come in threes and the sudden turn of events in his life are no different. First, major budget cuts to the fire department force him to take a part-time job as a medic and his new partner hates not just him, but all men in general. Next, his rig gets stolen by some drunken bum named Indian Jack, who then crashes it into the local Planetarium. Then finally, some punk named Clayton shows up starts to stir up all kinds of trouble.

Young and way too damn good looking for his own good, Clayton has come to Flint to claim back his first love, Dylan. There is just one problem with that, Dylan is already in a committed relationship with Justin's best friend, Kaleb. Since Justin loves Kaleb like a brother, he intervenes by coldly telling Clayton to leave Flint and never come back. To his annoyance, not only does the younger man refuse to leave, but he somehow manages to get a job at one of the local hospitals. So now not only does Justin have to face that problem three is not going away, but he has to see him every day--all the while fighting the growing attraction between them.

Then Justin learns that everything about Clayton may not be as it seem. The younger man harbors a past and secrets from which he's never healed from. Despite himself, Justin draws closer to Clayton and knows that nothing will stop him from tying to protect the troubled man. Will Justin be able to help him become whole, or will Clayton be lost to him forever?

3 stars!

In this part of the EMS Heat series, we meet Justin, who is Kaleb’s best friend and also a firefighter. When Dylan’s ex-boyfriend Clayton suddenly comes to Flint, Justin reacts at first very defensively, not willing to see anybody destroy his best friend’s fresh relationship. However, he immediately feels that Clayton is keeping a heavy secret from Dylan and he is soon drawn to the beautiful and fragile young man.

While I really liked the dynamics between Dylan and Kaleb, I didn’t connect with Clayton and Justin in the same way. I was – of course – expecting that this part of the series would just develop like all the others, but this time the instant attraction did feel strange and even less credible than in all the other installments.

However, I really liked getting information on Clayton’s point of view considering what happened between him and Dylan. It was a nice complementation to the previous part and gave me a much clearer view on the events. I felt bad for Clayton and I really hope that he will be very happy in his new relationship.

Well, that was mediocre.

Let me back up for a sec…

I was first introduced to Stephani Hecht’s EMS Heat series by a Goodreads friend (and fellow M/M romance junkie) in December 2013. All she had to say was that the eighteen-book series revolved around a group of doctors, paramedics, nurses, and firefighters who live and work in the rather economically depressed city of Flint, Michigan, and I was all grabby hands and “gimme, gimme, gimme!” (after all, I’m fairly certain that the only thing better than one man in uniform is two men in uniform).

I read the first novella in the series, Running Hot, that night and enjoyed the heck out of it; I thought the story was a perfect balance between sweet and sexy, the main characters were equal parts smokin’ hot and adorkable, and the ending had a twist that I totally didn’t see coming.

Since then, I’ve read the next four novellas in the series and they’ve been good (good, not great). Running between 80 and 140 pages each, I’ve found these stories to be the perfect palate cleanser between longer and/or more intensely emotional books.

But now I think I’m bored.

Code Blue is the fifth installment in the series and it was… just okay.

I must confess that I liked Clayton’s character quite a bit. While a little stereotypical for the gay son of a preacher, his back story was nothing short of heartbreaking and I found my heart immediately going out to the poor guy. But despite having endured a hellish few months at the hands of those who were supposed to love and care for him, Clayton managed to remain a sweet, kind, humble guy. I appreciated his independent streak, chuckled over his sheltered upbringing, and found his enthusiasm for pop culture and gay sex strangely endearing.

However, as much as I liked Clayton, I felt almost nothing towards Justin. Well, except for the fact that I was mildly annoyed with his mercurial mood swings and attitude changes towards Clayton — he was smitten, then he was suspicious and irate, then he was annoyed, then he was vaguely accommodating, then… BAM! He was so deeply in love he couldn’t see straight. And yet somehow the character’s personal roller coaster of emotions and reactions didn’t grab my heart and pull me along for the ride.

Overall, I thought the chemistry between the two characters was okay (but nothing to write home about), the sex was okay, too (but again, not as scorching hot as earlier novellas in the series), the dialogue was passable (but mundane), and the ending was sweet (but forgettable). All in all, it was a perfectly satisfactory story, but one whose title I’m struggling to remember even as I write this review.

That can’t be a good sign, can it?!

I admit, I'm biased when it comes to stories from one of my favorite authors, one of them being Stephani Hecht. Cause I can't really find things that I truly dislike THOUGH I always try to give fair opinion. This story is the 5th story of St. Michael's story. If I have any issues, it will be

(1) It's starting to get hard to keep track of the names, some just blurred: Justin, James, Jessie (what's with all the "J"??)
(2) The overused stereotype of bulky/macho/good body older man with the more slanky/slender younger man that seems to be the theme of this series. It's soooo yaoi stereotype that might gets old! AND
(3) Five gay couples from the same hospital. Really?? Is Flint a new gay town that I need to know about??

Okay, after the issues I have, I still like this story very much. In fact, it might be my 2nd favorite in the series after "Light and Sirens" (a.k.a Lucas and Matt's story). Mainly because I really feel for Clayton. From the first time he steps down the bus, with a hope that he can find Dylan and rekindle their love. From the way he grows spine after the horrible things he faced from his family by being gay (Reminds me of that movie, "Latter Days") to be able to grab the chance to be a better man that I know he can be. He's the heart of this story and I just love him like a baby brother. Though I must tease him for liking reality TV (hours of watching Jersey Shore, Clayton, really? *grin*)

The minute I saw this was out, click over to eXtasy Books took forever to log in but I got in and got right away. And was not disappointed at all..

Another great one in this wonderful series. If you liked the rest of the series this one is a must then.
Clayton comes to town to find his lost first love, and finds much more. He hasn't had a easy path by any meaning.

My heart went out to him when he arrived on the bus and you learn of the things he survived to get there. Let's just say he has a lot in common with Dylan (from bk#4) and Jessie (from bk#2). If you read those you will have some idea where Clayton is coming from. (not sure if that's a spoiler or not so I marked it as)

Great read, recommend definitely!!!

I felt so bad for Clayton! He leaves his comfortable life to rush to Dylan only to find he has Kaleb now. He lives in a gross motel and is quickly running out of money. Good thing Dylan, Kaleb and Justin help him out. Justin hates him in the beginning but softens up when he realizes how innocent, kind and without malice Clayton is. They cuddle a whole lot during the build up of the relationship you can actually call it a courtship.

Another nice installment to the series.
Kind of similar to the previous one to me, but no less good. I've been worried about Clayton's appearence at first, since even though I felt for him, I rooted for Caleb and Dylan's relationship, so I'm glad there wasn't any doubt who Dylan loves now and I sure glad Clayton finds his own happynes with Justin, they both deserve it.

The EMS Heat series, like some of Stephani Hecht's other series, is formulaic. Lather, rinse, repeat. But when you got a good thing going, who cares? This installment, however, irked me. It had great promise and was rolling along nicely until the 88% mark. Then it turned juvenile and just. Plain. Cheesy.

Bottom line: Fumble at the 1-yard line.

The EMS Heat Series by Stephanie Hecht

I’m reviewing this entire series in one go because they all have similar themes. Each book is short and sweet – little bite-sized stories when you want to pick up something quick to read (I read each one in one sitting).

This is one of those series (previously called St Michael’s) that centres on a group of men who work in emergency services. It is a glorious combination of EMTs, firemen, nurses, doctors…

Each book is relatively short (<100 pages) and make the perfect quick read when you want something short but enjoyable. Each book has a fairly emotional theme – these guys have been abused, hurt in the past, rejected by their families, and any manor of other things that have left them feeling scared and vulnerable but each man finds his partner, someone to love them for who they are and to teach them about trust.

For such serious topics, there isn’t a lot of time to delve into each story in depth but there is just enough heartache and working through issues to reach a happy ending. Okay, so most seem a little unrealistic – love at first sight, overcoming issues quickly and even the over-abundance of gay guys in the town – but I read this series for a light enjoyment so didn’t mind a bit!

You can read the blurb to find out more about each story so I have included a little quote from each book to give a sense of the style...

#1 Running Hot “Running to him, Calvin threw his arms around James and pulled him into a rib-crushing hug. They had a huge audience, but he didn’t give a damn.”

#2 Man Down “I told myself I couldn’t get close to you because I didn’t want any complications in my life. That I didn’t have time for a relationship because of school and stuff. The truth is, I didn’t want to grow attached to you because I can’t stand to lose someone else who I care about.”

#3 Lights and Sirens “Unlike Gary, Matt happened to be good looking on the inside too.”

#4 Priority One “This was it. Finally Dylan would be able to know what it felt like to be with another man. After tonight, there’d be no more lingering doubts. No more false hopes that maybe he’d been wrong all along and wasn’t gay and could make things right back home. If he did this, actually went through with it, these would be no question of what he was. “

#5 Code Blue “He wondered how this little brat had managed to mean so much to him in just the span of a day.”

#6 Red Lights and Silver Bells “Kaleb gaped at him in shock. Even after all these months of having to deal with Dylan’s insecurities, it still shocked Kaleb every time he realized just how little his lover thought of himself. If it was anyone who could have their pick of men, it was Dylan.”

#7 High Flow “Since he’d gotten away with touching him earlier, Patrick allowed himself to reach out and cup Forrest’s face. When the younger man briefly closed his eyes and turned into the touch, a thrill of victory went through Patrick. That’s it, babe, open up to me. It’s safe, I promise. Since he knew it was too early to speak those words aloud, Patrick simply went with, “I want you because you’re Forrest. I wouldn’t change a thing about you because you’re perfect the way you are”

#8 Three-Alarm Fire “Why it’s so easy to tell you things that I could never share with anyone else. It’s because you know what it’s like to be hurt by someone you love. You understand me in ways that nobody else could.”

#9 Shades of the Past “As Kiefer’s body seemed to mold into his side, Ray became aware of two things. One, that Kiefer made for a perfect fit. Second came the startling realization that Ray would do anything to protect the medic from being hurt again.”

#10 In His Hero’s Shadow “I don’t want to get hurt,” Brody finally admitted. “I know I’m not good enough for you and that it will only be a matter of time before you figure that out for yourself and dump me.”

#11 Life Over Limb “Nah, he was just being nice. There is no way in hell a guy that good-looking could be interested in me.”

#12 FUBAR “The victim finally looked up and Danny sucked in a breath as he found himself instantly attracted to the other man. Damn it though, he knew he shouldn’t be having that reaction, after all, this guy barely avoided being viciously attacked. The last thing he needed was his would-be rescuer drooling over him.”

#13 Status Dramaticus “Are you even listening to me?” Ah, no. I was too busy drooling over you and imagining how it would feel to have you fuck me into the mattress.

#14 Tagged and Bagged ”The good think about Housten being asleep, aside from the fact his mouth was shut, was that he wasn’t aware of how sappy Rich was being. And Rich was being sappy with a capital S.”

#15 Blamestorming “Intrigued because I’m gay and working in such an alpha dominated field, or because you’re interested in me for something more than a friend?”

#16 Circling the Drain ”Would you think I sound young and dorky if I said that if I wasn’t careful I could fall in love with you?”

#17 STAT “For some reason, Wells felt a flash of jealously over Jaret being so close to another man. Which was crazy. He and Jaret weren’t even friends, much less in a relationship.”

#18 City of Fire “Awww….you better watch it, people will say we’re in love.” “I see that you’ve been watching Oklahoma again.” “What can I say, I’m just a guy who can’t say no.”

The beginning of the story didn’t really have anything to do with Justin and Clayton’s relationship, it was a glimpse into Justin’s life and he was a little bland. What saved the story was Clayton. He is an exposed nerve who has had a hard life, one blow after another, and learns the man he thought he loved is in another relationship. Justin takes him in not because he’s altruistic, he wants to keep Clayton away from his ex.

As Clayton gets a job and falls for Justin. I do like how Justin worries over Clayton and finally admits his feelings. A good read!

This novella was quite short and the insta-love was a bit over the top of course, so this probably should have been a 3.5. I can't explain but I enjoyed this romance and these characters. There were plenty of funny moments to off set the angst and Clayton was just 'adorkable!' Justin turned out to have quite the protective streak. Overall, a sweet story with a HEA.

Clayton's story just about broke my heart....Justin wasn't fleshed out enough to really catch on to his character for me but still was an enjoyable read. Ms Hecht sure knows her way around a sex scene.

I think I may be done with the St. Michael's series. It has been a nice ride with the boys, but it has come to an end for this reader.
The 5 St. Michael's books I've read were short enough that they could have been made into one really big book of man love, even if the stories did become repetitive towards the end.

Justin and Clayton were okay as a couple. One has to suspend a bit of reality that two people would fall for each other so fast, but I guess that is what makes this fiction.

Something that really started to bother me and take me out of the story was the way the Justin referred to Clayton as the "brat" or "little twerp" at the most inopportune times. These terms in my opinion are not endearing at all. In fact they are how I would refer to a young child that was on my nerves and not someone I was falling for or desired sexually. They were overused too. These things don’t normally bother me, but it was enough that I am done with the series. Or maybe the rest of the hook-ups just don’t do it for me anymore.

I would recommend the books to those of you who have a thing for sexy firefighters, paramedics, doctors and lots of man lovin!

This is another story in the EMS Heat series. Dylan and Kaleb from the last book are doing great, when out of the blue Clayton, Dylan’s childhood friend and ex of sorts, shows up hoping to rekindle their relationship. Justin, Kaleb’s best friend is pissed, and thinks Clayton is going to try and break up Dylan and Kaleb. Despite his better judgment, he’s attracted to the innocent young man and invites him to stay with him, in part to avoid Dylan being around him. It seems the reason Clayton didn’t support Dylan when it all went to hell was because his super-religious family had him committed. Once playboy Justin gets to know him, he can’t help but be more attracted by Clayton’s strength. There was lots of humour in this as Clayton takes up swearing and becomes totally addicted to The Jersey Shore (god help us all) when he’s allowed to watch TV. The blurb makes it sound like Clayton’s more of a brat, but he’s not in the story, he was a sweetie and it was an enjoyable addition to the series.

The problems I have with all of this series so far is particularly evident in this book. I just don't care about the characters. Not because they're badly written, but because I don't have time to. So far, the pacing of all the books has been almost identical: the fucked up MCs meet, cue instant chemistry, they either fuck then fight or fight then fuck within 24 hours then there is a jump in time of a few weeks and we see the MCs living happily ever after together, all their major emotional trauma fixed by the magic cock. It's just all too fast to be believable.

It's a shame because the author has the makings of great angsty romance novels in her blurbs but races through the meaty emotional stuff that makes a reader fall in love with a character. I've finished every single book so far with a feeling of regret that I couldn't have gotten to see more.

I really love this series so I did enjoy this book but it was so short I wanted more. The relationship seemed to be on fast forward and felt rushed. There was a lot of history and back story squeezed into such a short space that I think somethings were glossed over that needed to be expanded upon. But it was a good read, and it's always fun revisiting these guys. :)

The book (as all the books in this serie) should have been a lot longer. I would have loved it if the author spent more time in developing the characters because they deserve it.
But i enjoyed reading it.
