I bought the 1978 copy of this biography with its dust jacket, and it's just the most divine physical object - which makes it a shame Goodreads can't seem to find an illustration of an edition. I didn't find it hard! Erika Ostrovsky's style reminds me of Lesley Blanch, romantic and sweeping, a little Edwardian and none the worse for that.

I relished this partisan biography of Mata Hari, and if it read like a novel there are plenty of other books I can go to for the facts and nothing but the facts, however I doubt they would be as entertaining. If you want to read a story redolent of la belle epoque France, this captures its flavour beautifully.

I'd just like to add I read in another review a complaint about the end notes. It's quite a common convention, nothing to be afraid of.

Mata Hari was an interesting woman, but unlike Ostrovsky, I don't think she was an angel. The author obviously didn't see Mata Hari as human but rather some ideal. I just wish this book took a more realistic view of the woman. I felt like I was reading fiction rather than a biography. Also, as an author, if you are going to use endnotes rather than footnotes, please provide notation within the text. No one wants to flip back and forth to the endnotes just to see if there are any for each page of text.

Interesting and informative biography of Mata Hari. Well-written. It's interesting since it contradicts the one I read many years ago about whether or not Mata Hari was really a spy or not. I'll have to find another book and continue the reading.
