With honesty, compassion, and perspective, Billy Sprague reaches out as only one who has suffered deep loss can. Facing the death of a fiancé, a beloved grandmother, and a favorite college professor, Sprague pulls from the depths of his soul to share insights and encouragement with those living through grief and heartache. Illustrated with restful, hope–filled photographs of nature, Letter to a Grieving Heart will comfort the broken and assure them that someday they, too, will feel the sun again.
My mother died unexpectedly from ovarian cancer when I was a young 39 years old and she was only 61. It was devastating. What I learned is that even as a therapist, you don't know death until it happens to you. I'd already lost my biological father in '99, but his was a distant loss. This book said things NO one else was saying to me. What I discovered even as I read it's pages is that when you lose someone that close to you, you join a club that you wouldn't wish on anyone, but that no one outside of the club understands. This coffee table/gift book actually moved me through my grief not only by its words, but by its artistry. KUDOS to Billy Sprague, and I wish we didn't have to belong to the same club.
when people ask your gentle writer about the crevices of grief, we always offer the folowing;
Read Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, "On Death and Dying." Know and understand the phases of grief.
Talk about your feelings. Don't just tell the same tale to every one.
Join talk groups and forums where and when you can.
Give others the support that you so dearly need.
Write/journal about your feelings.
Turn to Psalms as often as you feel lead to do so.
Letter to a Grieving Heart has plenty of these ideals as well. It offers hope to the Believer. It comforts those who need it. We also appreciate the interspersed "work sheets."
This was a wonderful gift of the healing of grief. From the author's personal experience of loss, he will guide you through the grieving process. The author shares how various people in his life helped him navigate the process of healing. There is no step-by-step method and the same thing does not work for everyone. But knowing that God loves and cares for you as well as people in your life who are willing to walk with you through the rain is comforting.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author shares his own vulnerabilities and grief experience to help people go through the grieving process. And it is exactly as he says, except each one's path to the land of the living is different. This book is a great gift to a person mourning a loved one and would highly recommend it to church libraries or handed out in hospital ministries. Ever part of this book is heart-felt and true. I received a copy from #Netgalley!
This book was OK as a self-help book. I have not gone through the same loss as the author but had hoped it would provide encouragement for everyday loss. There were some good bible quotes. But I found the book more depressing than uplifting.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It touched alot of knots and bolts. It helps you know that someone, somewhere has gone through something similar.
Its a pocket book of comfort and doesn't force you to come out of whatever you're feeling, rather it feels like a comforting pat from a friend that offers notes from his own experience.
Highly recommended. Will make a good gift for someone grieving too.
I have not experienced loss like the author has. However, I could feel his pain leap right off the pages. I would recommend this book to anyone dealing with loss. It does not simply brush over the pain. It deals with it honestly and encourages the reader throughout.
Letter to a Grieving Heart by: Billy Sprague. Letter to a Grieving Heart is a poignant, soul-searching road map back to a meaningful, productive, blessed life after the death of a loved one..Letter to a Grieving Heart is more than a specific series of steps meant to overcome grief. Instead, this book offers a strong message of hope with Biblical scriptures reinforcing that hope along with practical wisdom...
Letter to a Grieving Heart is a page by page personal story to guide people on how to deal with grief. The author is very open with his trials and struggles with grief. His story would make someone who is grieving feel as though they are not alone. He makes the tears of grief so needed and okay for those who go through such difficulties as a hard loss. He shares some songs He has written. He shares how much it has meant to him to have others walk the difficult journey and care for him in such specific and special ways. This book would be good to give to someone who is grieving. I like the leaves that are throughout the book. They are very soothing and comforting. I appreciate this opportunity to read this book and review it .
