The Heike Story is a modern translation of a Japanese classic.

Kyoto in the twelfth century was a magnificent city, but crime, disorder, and lust were rampant. The people were abused by the nobility, while armed Buddhist monks terrorized court and commoner alike. In despair, the Emperor called upon the Heike and Genji clans to quell civil disturbances. Although the clans su

Sayang seribu s

Awalnya saya pikir, apa yang mau saya ulas ya, saya pasti suka sama buku ini sih. Bagaimanapun ini kan

1. Karya Yoshikawa Eiji. I have been smitten by his work eversince I read an excerpt of Taiko in my junior high years.

The Heike Story is an epic tale of two rival clans struggling for power. The loyal Heike and Genji clans have served the Fujiwara court well, but later find themselves in a battle for military and political control of the Imperial throne.

In this tale we follow three generation of Heike commanders starting with Tadamori, then Kiyomori, and finally Shigemori. Throughout most of this historical novel, Kiyomori takes center stage, and it is primarily through his eyes, we can comprehend the tumultuou

An English translation of a modern rewrite of a Japanese classic. Feudal Japan in all its glorious intrigue and court machinations. An insight into how people lived and their culture. The book races along in an expository style - do not look for modern characterizations - until the last 100 pages. A few editing/ continuity errors occur before the book ends abruptly.

I bought this book, along with a couple other Japanese books, at a bookstore in Narita Airport after my trip in Tokyo. I don't think I would have found it easily in the US. As a book, I would jokingly call this the Game of Thrones of Japan. It is a monumental book with a lot going on, with plots to engage a variety of readers. There's romance, intrigue, war, murder, dashing heroes, crooked villains and languishing heroines. It is entertaining. Originally the Japanese version was much longer, but ...more

Sel ...more

This is a strange book, and I'm glad there was an historical note at the end to explain why. The story doesn't end first of all, it just stops. In the historical note it explains that the novel is only 2/3 of the way done. Why would they release an unfinished work you might ask. I'm guessing because Eiji Yoshikawa passed away in 1962. The tale ends with the oldest Genji escaping the capital, who would go onto bringing the Heike down. But there is no explanation of that unless you read the note a ...more

The bell of the Gion Temple tolls into every man's heart to warn him that all is vanity and evanescence. The faded flowers of the sala trees by the Buddha's deathbed bear witness to the truth that all who flourish are ...more

The Heike Monogatari is the epic tale of a clash between two warrior clans, the Heike or Taira and the Genji or Minamoto for power. In the epic, the Heike under Lord Kiyomori inflict a comprehensive defeat on their rivals and take control of the court. However, instead of executing all the defeated Minamotos as expected, Lord Kiyomori spared the lives of the 3 youngest Minamoto sons. Of course, these 3 would eventually grow up and lead the Minamotos to victory over the Heike who were wiped out o ...more

The English translation is great. It provides good background throughout the text to update the reader on Japanese culture at the time which was profoundly different from the era where the samurai were more established. Here they are merely warriors that are barely tolerated but used in the machinations of nobles, emperors, ministers, and ex-emperors. It shows how they parley this it something meaningful that can lead to a grab for power. What happens in this text profoundly effects the culture ...more

This novel saw the rise of the Heike clan from being Fujiwara clan's watchdogs to the respected warrior class at court. It starts with Kiyomori of the Heike as young man despairing of his household's poverty-stricken condition. Even then he already knew that he was meant for greater things. Kiyomori was brave, ambitious, and daring and because of him the Heike clan rose to immeasurable heights. Perhaps until the Genji clan took the seat of power from them.

This a very interesting read especially

Japan`s feudal era is one of my favorite piece of world history, which is the reason I bought and read this book. The title contains the words "love" and "war", but I was very disappointed to find that less than 10% of this "tale" is actual war. Love? It`s pretty difficult to talk about love during those times, the 12th century, since they did not even have a word for it, not until many years later when the Japanese learned about it from the Europeans, around the 17th century. ...more

I really wanted to get into this book as there are so few stories about this era in English. However, I could never connect with the characters. It felt like there were major time skips, the characters were one-sided and hollow, and little explanation of the political state is given. People are mentioned in a paragraph then forgotten about. There are uprisings but no real reasons are given as to why.

Judulnya Minamoto no Yoritomo...
