Deirdre Matthews was born in a village on the Welsh-English border, where the public library featured largely in her life. Her mother, who looked upon literature as a basic necessity of life, fervently encouraged her passion for reading, little knowing it would one day motivate her daughter into writing her first novel.
At 18, she met a future Engineer, who had set in a pendant a gold sovereign, that his grandmother put in his hand when he was born, and she have never taken off since. After their marriage he swept her off to Brazil, where he worked as Chief Engineer of a large gold-mining operation in the mountains of Minas Gerais, a setting which later provided a very popular background for several of her early novels. Nine happy years passed there before the question of their small son's education decided their return to Britain. Not long afterward a daughter was born, and for a time she lived a fulfilled life as a wife and mother who always made time to read, especially in the bath!
Her husband's job took him abroad again, to Portugal, West Africa, and various countries of the Middle East, but this time she stayed home with the family. And spent a lot of lonely evenings in between the reunions when her husband came home on leave. "Instead of reading other people's novels all the time," he suggested one day, "why not have a shot at writing one yourself?" So she did.
But first she took a creative writing course. Encouraged by the other students' enthusiasm for her contributions, she decided to try her hand at romance, and read countless Mills & Boon novels as research before writing one herself. Her first novel was accepted in 1982 as Catherine George, which Romantic Times voted best of its genre for that year, along with more than sixty written since.
These days son and daughter have fled the nest, but they return with loving regularity to where she and her husband back for good from his travels live, with Prince, the most recent Labrador, in a house built at the end of Victoria's reign in four acres of garden on the cliffs between the beautiful Wye Valley and the River Severn.
I don’t often comment on it, but that’s one eye-catching cover on the edition I read. It seems really unusual to lead with an interior shot without any humans or human parts in the frame, but I liked it. It’s like that bed is waiting.
Emily left her previous power job because she moved in with a co-worker and when they broke up she quit. She’s now secretly writing a novel and cleaning rich people flats.
One day, she’s still at Lucas’ place working away at her novel on her laptop when he comes home and catches her. It could have been a fairly terrible scene, but Lucas has serious man flu, so he doesn’t launch into the traditional romance hero thing where he accuses her of being a druggie gold digging scammy criminal and immediately demand that she become his mistress. Instead, Emily goes home and Lucas goes to bed.
Emily senses that there is some lightning-shaped rip in Romancelandia’s space-time continuum, and that to prevent the entire fabric of the universe unravelling, she’s going to have to take an unusually active role in kicking this romance along. She pesters poor Lucas until he agrees to letting her look after him, and she moves in for a couple of days to nurse him back to health. It’s a good thing she does, because if she hadn’t: no more category romances. Ever.
What makes this romance for me forever is that Lucas and Emily have fever sex. Fever sex is most unaccountably awesome. I first realised that this was a thing when I read a short story about the time when Dragonlance’s Raistlin got really sick and there was this beautiful girl and a tent and what could have been an hallucination and may have had a nine month later consequence that was dealt with in another story with a grown up daughter who may have been scamming. I read that story so long ago that I think I am partially making it up. I am squeamish and wary of medical romances because I worry about people having sex in hospitals. And nothing tastes good when you’re sick, you ache all over, there’s all the coughing and sweating and pain. I don’t get why I like fever sex, but I do.
Lucas and Emily are both nice enough and have only modest baggage. Having said that, there’s a casualness in the way they interact and talk that I’m not quite convinced works for me, and I wasn’t completely happy with the mystery surrounding Emily’s ex. Enjoyable enough that I’ll try more Catherine George books.
The heroine is a house cleaner for the hero, when he goes down with a super bad case of the flu, the heroine decides to put everything aside and take care of him. As she nurses him back to health, one night grabbed her and made vicious but pleasing love to her in a matter of minutes. Both of them being shocked with the outcome and the fact that she may be pregnant, take time away from each other. The heroine promises to tell the hero if she is pregnant. As time goes on, our villain causes a bunch of mischief which eventually leads to the hero and heroine getting closer and learning some truth. At the end of the novel they decide to wed and she finds out she really was pregnant, despite the fact her 'period' showed up on time.
It was a pretty good novel, I had great enjoyment reading it and was ecstatic that I was finally reading a worthy novel. The last couple I've read left me banging my head a bit.

Me gustó mucho.
Like it.
These two are idiots. Mostly harmless idiots, but idiots. There was some super gross birth control stuff (he tells her she shouldn't/must not get the morning after pill and she's all, oh good I don't have to make that decision - blech). But then we get to the part where her evil ex (who stole from her and cheated on her) is revealed to be a cheater and gay. *sigh*
If the only queer character in your story is a negative/bad character or tragically dies you're being homophobic and you need to stop.
This is a strange one. She's a former secretary who does cleaning while writing a novel. He's a banker. He catches her working on her book in his flat when he comes home early with the flu. She nurses him back to health and there's an incident one night. They bicker and fight constantly. She's prickly, he's grouchy. I guess they are a match made in heaven. To complete the medical vibe, she hurts her ankle later in the story and it's his turn to nurse her. There's an ex in there too.
It was alright 2 people that would maybe never have met if he hadn't got sick. Is she preggers isn't she preggers, who knows? No major angst or blackmail or huge misunderstanding just 2 peeps who get it on and decide they've fallen in love with only minor plot machinations to move the story along. Maybe I just like more drama in my life hence the 3 stars
nice book. great character, i love lucas. but maybe there should be more lucas side of view, too much Emily side of view. Actually I really want to know what did Lucas think when he's with Emily. but after all it a great novel to read.
