I am currently re-reading Sarban and this volume is certainly better than his (in?)famous 'The Sound of His Horn'. It was also the last volume published during his lifetime and seems more polished with better drawn characters.

I have a number of Tartarus Press books including all of the Sarban books. I had been holding off reading The Doll Maker and felt the time is right. This was an entertaining tale if less a fully sketched out one. People who require in depth explanations for all aspects of Sarban's other worldliness will probably not embrace him. I enjoy his works.

I didn't enjoy this book much. The story had great potential but was poorly set out and I found the climax...disappointingly anti-climatic. There wasn't a sense of closure at the end, it wasn't even a cliffhanger, in fact it felt rushed. Also, I was constantly on the lookout for clues about what time period the story was set in...
This book would probably appeal to young girls who are looking for a mild thrill, like some sort of lesser Twilight.

2.5 rounded up. Interesting concept, but super boring.
