We found too many beautiful designs in this book by Annie Riggs and I think the real secret behind this book's beauty is that she has some crazy showstoppers (you know the ones that take you all afternoon and involve 30 different things from 3 different stores) but she also has charming cupcakes that take some extra care but come out looking wonderful.
There is a great section of recipes and a solid list of steps and tips and tricks for each project and we really liked that. After we finally settled on a few to try I headed out to the specialty shop to spend way more money than I should have on items for the cupcakes. Four hours later we had 24 cupcakes that we cheerfully took to our favourite holiday party. Was it worth it? The cupcakes were eaten and many people said kind things about them... but the true beauty that comes from a book like this is flipping through the pages with my daughters and talking about how pretty the designs are, what the steps are to make the intricate candies she has on the top, whether we liked the flavour combinations (sometimes we didn't) and that is what makes this a superior cupcake book. It is sophisticated and filled with variety so there is something in here for everyone to enjoy.
Grab it from your library shelf for your own pleasure or buy it for a friend who loves to bake and experiment because this book is one that you'll return to year, after year. Not a flash in the pan cupcake book. One for your cookbook shelf. A keeper. The cupcakes will not keep - they will be gobbled up in a flash although it took you ten minutes to craft each one - but it's all worth it. Loved this book.
