Although over 25 years old, this UNITED METHODIST HYMNAL: PEW EDITION (which comes in seven different colors) is still a go-to for the wide variety of hymns in it. Methodists are very strong in Anglo-American hymnody and this edition is new enough to be sensitive to ecumenical currents as well. Among the roughly 800 hymns in this hymnal are "Holy, Holy, Holy," "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (and its Spanish translation, "Mil Voces Para Celebrar"), "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and "Creator of the Stars of Night." New or used, a copy would grace the piano of any family that loves the hymn-singing experience. One small caveat: All the arrangements in this hymnal are copyrighted, and performance in any non-U Methodist service is prohibited.
My UCC church uses this hymnal and its companion, the Faith We Sing, as our worship resources. I have copies of both at home. While the United Methodist Hymnal is nearly a quarter century old, the gold shines through it. Music in this hymnal includes oldies but goodies, Gospel, spirituals, Taize and world music. Consistent with the liturgical year, pastors, lay pastors and music directors will find hymns that will match their tradition's preference and celebrations for given services. Liturgy in the front of the book is broad and accommodating to a spectrum of styles including Baptisticostal, high church/Anglo Catholic and broad church. I would highly recommend The United Methodist Hymnal to any person in any tradition whether laity or clergy. This hymnal will have as long a life in churches as the Congregationalist's Pilgrim Hymnal, the Baptist Hymnal from the Southern Baptists or the '78 Lutheran Book of Worship. Savior this book and hold it close to your heart for this book is amazing.
