Rawlings Men #4

Handcuffs and Trouble

Rate this book
As the newest constable in the station, Trent Rawlings isn’t entirely surprised to find himself being hazed by the other cops. Determined not to make any more of a fool of himself than is absolutely necessary, he’s merely biding his time and going through the motions until he gets to the punch line. It has to be a hazing. If it’s not, he’s in real trouble. Kieran Osmond doesn’t know what the hell the little fool thinks he’s doing, stumbling into the middle of an undercover operation. All Kieran knows is that he has to rescue the younger man before he gets them both killed. Luckily for them both, Trent seems to be good at obeying orders and following a more dominant man’s lead. He may even be too good at it for Kieran’s peace of mind. Maybe Trent isn’t the only man who’s in trouble...

Just re-read this book after a year and lowered my rating. I actually found this book kind of insulting. The 19 year old rookie police constable is treated rather horribly by his superior officer who then takes him home and fucks him. Not cool, not romantic. *shrugs*

Handcuffs and Trouble is part of a novellas series, Handcuffs and Lace, that mixes BDSM, cops (or better constables) and pretty boys. I read the first in the series and now this is the fourth, and the above is the common trend I found.

In this novella, Trent is a rookie that is sent out to the “wolves”; not clear if it was intentional or if it was a mistake, the fact is that Trent is in a warehouse full of criminals his first day on the job. As a consequence, Ossy, an undercover cop, has to come to rescue him, and the only way he sees is to convince the criminals that Trent is his pet.

If the reader was wondering about Trent’s willingness to play “gay” for the sake of the job, don’t worry. Trent is gay and Ossy, that is also a family friend, knows that, so he is not forcing a 19 years old guy to do something he despises, but indeed he is forcing a virgin boy (virgin in all the meaning of the word) to face his sexual desires and urges.

Lucky Trent, Ossy is a good master, and apparently, he is also willing to play teacher and Dom, all at the same time. There is a bit of “fated” lovers here, Ossy is gay and he is a friend of Trent’s family, an enlarged family where most of the men are cops: if they have to “give” their baby, Trent, to someone, at least they will do that to someone they know and trust, and Ossy will know that he cannot mess with Trent, otherwise he will have to face all the family.

Nice novella, good sex, and a cute character, Trent, who was really up-to the “pet” role, he really made me think to an eager puppy.

This fourth story in the series takes a look at yet another type of D/s relationship: that of an experienced dom and a young man who is just beginning to figure out that he may be a submissive. Add a little bit of danger, since they're cops in an undercover situation, and you've got a very interesting, and extremely hot, mix of elements.

Trent is a rookie cop, who ends up almost exposing himself because his superiors don't adequately brief him (due to an error, as it turns out, but still). He tries to play along but is clearly out of his depth. All he knows is that his life depends on the older cop. His biggest fear is that he'll stop taking an interest in him once the case is solved. All he knows is that he wants more - of being told what to do and definitely more hot sex.

Kieran is a slightly cynical older cop who can't believe Trent came onto the case as unprepared as he does. He also can't believe how attracted he finds himself to the virginal submissive, not his normal 'type' at all.

I really liked this look at both of them, their slowly dawning realization that they may want more than working the case together, and how careful Kieran is of Trent - not just because he is inexperienced, but because he figures out he wants more from the younger man. Despite the lack of open emotions (which really wouldn't have fit with these two characters) I found myself involved an interested in how they'd get along.

This is a great continuation of the Rawlings Men series. I liked the relationship between Kieran and Trent and how Kieran didn't exploit Trent's virgin submissiveness. He took control of it (in a good way) cradled it, smoothed it and loved it. Lol.

I loved the start of this book and how Kieran is forced to rescue him. How Kieran is willing to be the dominant to Trent's submissive but knows that even though Trent is a definite submissive, he's still a Rawlings. And Rawlings men are definite trouble. :D

This is my second Ms. Dare book. This is a short and sweet smexy story. I love reading about cops. I wasn't sure how the m/m would work with cops. As it turns out, it worked out well for me. The story wasn't so much about cops but more about a virgin cop being topped by a more experienced cop. There wasn't much development in the story and the interaction between Trent and Kieran went pretty much straight into D/s. I still enjoyed it and now want to read the entire series. Recommended for those who like hot sexy men getting it on so they can use it for their self pleasuring.

Good kinky m/m romance about a rookie constable who thinks he must be getting hazed or something when he ends up in a dangerous dive bar with no idea who he's supposed to find. Good thing he's found first. :)

Trent Rawlings is a rookie, mistakenly sent in place of Ed Rawlings to an undercover op where Kieran is forced to improvise to save the operation (not to mention both their lives) with a bit of hot D/s subterfuge.

Trent is adorable, Kieran is hot. An excellent addition to the series!

I always enjoy Kim Dare's writing and this was no exception. It's hard to choose, but I think the Rawlings series have to be my favorite.

Though, as usual, I wished for it to be a bit longer!

I did like this one, and must agree with the other reader who said this was probably the best of the series...unless of course, Kim writes another in the series!

Detective Sergeant Kieran Osmond knows all the Rawlings men are trouble. He may be friends with them, but he’d never be involved with one. Until Constable Trent Rawlings stumbles into Kieran’s undercover op and nearly gets himself killed. As it turns out, Trent was mistaken for his cousin, an experienced undercover police officer and was sent blind into a mission that Trent believed was only a hazing. The debacle has unexpected – but not unpleasant – consequences when Kieran saves Trent. The Rawlings men may be trouble, but Trent seems to be exactly the type of trouble Kieran needs.

I’ve read almost all the Rawlings Men stories and Handcuffs and Trouble is my favorite so far! Trent is too sweet for words and his shy, slightly awkward nature when it comes to men and sex endeared him to me from the start. Quite simply, I adored him. Kieran, in turn, is experienced, confident, and surprisingly tender. I loved his fascination with Trent and I eagerly read Handcuffs and Trouble, wanting these two to get together.

Handcuffs and Trouble is the fourth installment of Kim Dare’s Rawlings Men series, but it can be read as a standalone. However, readers who loved Handcuffs and Headlocks will delight in getting a brief glimpse of that story’s hero, Ed Rawlings. All in all, Handcuffs and Trouble was a fantastically entertaining tale and I look forward to revisiting Trent and Kieran again in the near future.

2012 Review:

I still like this very much, but in this case I particularly wish it had been longer.
The end comes way too early. It feels like much is missing, especially with Kieran . There’s still too much distance and not-knowing of each other to leave them to their devices.

Mind you, we’ll most likely catch a glimpse of how they turned out in the next part of the series but since the series is finite, that will at some point not help anymore.

Ah, for now I am still happy. ^^ Even if Kieran was a little too gruff and, well, dominant for my taste. Or bossy.

2015 Re-read:

It’s not that I didn’t enjoy this; because I did. But neither of the guys struck me as hugely endearing on his own. I suppose what I really missed was some conversation and interaction - really something more than the barest exchange of a few, laden yet somewhat impersonal words. Understatement is great. But I do like to get the sense that the couple I witness falling in love (or whatever they want to call it) actually gets to know the other person to an extent in the process. And not just sexually or, uh, in terms of kink.

Still, it was good. I am just thinking that perhaps I should try to switch this up with something else, just so that I won’t oversaturate myself with this style of story.

I DEFINITELY liked Trent, but honestly I had doubts about Kieran and his motives. True to Kim Dare, she DOES indicate that deeper feelings are planted and growing, but honestly he treated Trent in such a crass manner most of the time, even when they weren't on duty. Not mean, just straight forward but to such a point that I was taken aback thinking, 'what the hell does Trent SEE in this guy? He's not even nice. Screw that - why is ED allowing his brother [or cousin - that was never clarified] to be used by Kieran when he apparently knows how Kieran is with his relationships??'
Trent may have been a born submissive, and his actions were charming for the most part, but I kept coming back to the over-all feeling of him being used, and latching on to Kieran just because he was there, and because he was the first to show serious interest. =/

different characters - great change over! You can't help but love & hate them. Trent, the young cutie, and Kieran, the smart-ass - oops, can i say that?!? but Kieran is something that every one of us subs can't deny wanting so bad! his cockiness, his attitude and his ability to read a sub is so so hot! and how many of us subs wouldn't want a guy like Kieran to not only use us, but to secretly know that He wants us just as much as we want Him. watching Trent open up as he experiences something beyond what he knew could be, is something that us subs can relate to in that first Dom that used us and opened our true world for the first time. awesome writing Kim - You did it again for me!

The Rawlings Men series is always the perfect sexy little nugget. Such a quick read but thoroughly enjoyable. I often complain that the ending feel abrupt and they need one more chapter, but she gave us that in this one! Still an open HFN, but with more closure than we usually get IMO.

Talk about wet behind the ears! That pretty much sums up Trent. He’s a virgin, he ends up in the middle of an undercover operation without a clue about what’s going on, and oh yeah, he definitely needs someone to keep him out of trouble. Kieran was the right man for the job! I enjoyed this pair. :)

i am sucker for "i love you" endings, but i liked how this book ended with a "falling in love with you" it was the perfect ending for a story that is not very long and there we do not see a lot of development in the characters and their romance

Another cute and kinky addition to the Rawlings Men series - which is undoubtedly situated in some parallel universe where it's perfectly normal for half of the police force to be bent and cuffed. 2.5 stars

I enjoyed the innocence of Trent Rawlings in this installment of the series. He is a 19 year old virgin, according to the story... perhaps to eager for sex to be entirely believable. But fun nonetheless.

There is bondage, but it is sweet and loving... "pure soppiness" in the words of the story.

Mistaken identity leads to a virgin submissive going undercover where he meets his future dom, an undercover cop. After the case , Trent loses his virginity to Kieran. While not love yet, both know it won't be long until it is.

Tent Rawlings went under cover without a briefing because the Sargent thought he was Ed. He survived the assignment and found the right domm for his submissive nature
