SPECIAL REPRINT EDITION of the late Bernard McDonagh's 2000 classic Turkey guide. This highly acclaimed Blue Guide provides unrivalled coverage of Turkey's wonderful artistic heritage. The treasures include superb remains of Greek and Roman cities along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, the Crusader castles of the southeast, and beautiful mosques and medreses from the Selcuk and Ottoman periods.
What a delight to read a travel book for grown-ups, written with a proper vocabulary that doesn't shy away from words like 'incarnadine.' I used the Blue Guide many years ago to plan an unforgettable trip through Greece and this time it's the antiquities of Turkey center stage, once again handled with care and style. This book is full of juicy historical details and gossip about the Byzantine emperors and Turkish sultans, which fill in the story so that you know what you're seeing when you get there. In short, five stars, no kidding, a good read.
Suberb context, unless you are searching for something very specific (and probably in ruins) in Turkey, this book would include it, and will have the best explanations.
The historian's guide on a trip to Turkiye. Great history intro section that combines high-level historical events with detailed timeline. Excellent coverage of cities, including many I've not been able to reach despite my many weeks in Turkiye.
