Matrix of Destiny #4

That Familiar Touch

Rate this book
The beloved Matrix of Destiny series continues with the exciting tale of the beautiful feline shapeshifter Soosha. The Familiar woman yearns for exotic adventure, and must defy her king's orders to stay planetside. She sets off on a secret escapade to discover new worlds. Soon, her journey leads her to a mysterious land- and a very compelling stranger named Daxan.

Soosha tried to catch her breath as she looked up into the face of her decisive captor.

She confronted masculine features of perfect angles and hardened edges. Golden, serious eyes framed by thick, ebony lashes. And firm lips tilted by sensual secrets that begged to be bitten into release.

Soosha's own lips parted in breathless response.

The man's hair fell far below his shoulders; the strands were twisted from scalp to ends into long, handsome locks that were woven-bound throughout with black leather laces. Beaded coils hung at the ends. His hair color matched his eyes; yet, its true tone was difficult to tell in the weave of his hair. She suspected the strong sun of lightening some of the strands; for the golden color shaded from dark to light.

He was magnificient.

And since she came from a race that produced males of staggering beauty that was saying much.

His golden eyes- quite breathtaking, really, though they were both the same color- sharpened into hard slivers of disapproval.

Soosha rather liked that. To a cat such as she, such a stern expression could only be an invitation to come and play.

Before the night is through, their passionate encounter will make Daxan beg for more of THAT FAMILIAR TOUCH. . .

But his uncontrollable desire for the Familiar girl will shortly be put to the test when the fearsome Charl warrior known as Traed, along with her enraged, snarling brother show up on his doorstep to hunt Soosha down and bring her home.

Young Soosha is straining at the bit to start off on her first adventure. She can't wait to experience the freedom and excitement of exploring new worlds and just when she's reached her majority, the King of the Familiars closes the Tunnel that leads offworld and issues a decree that all Familiars are to remain on their home-world of M'yan until the psychotic leader Karpon has been brought to justice for his crimes against the Familiar people. This rather impetuous beauty is not going to let a kingly decree stop her and the second everyone has their back turned she darts through the first Tunnel she finds and of course finds herself running for her life the moment she steps through. Lucky for her, Daxan Sahain finds her gleefully sprinting through the marketplace and snatches her up before she can continue on in her mischievous ways. Against her yowling protests, he carts her back to his home in order to lock her away until her family can come for her. Soosha is just about to sink her teeth into him in what is definitely not a Familiar love bite when she's stunned to realize that this loathesome, unyielding Spoltam male is her Mate. With her winsome Familiar ways, she sinks her teeth in him anyway, determined to "begin as you mean to go on," and lets him have it. But this Spoltam male returns the gesture, again....and again... and again. Reciprocating has never been so fun.

And this is exactly what this 'extended novella' is. A lot of fun. Soosha's attempts at adventure was a laugh riot and I was laughing out loud several times during this book. It was the type of laughter that I couldn't stop even if I tried. Daxan was a very exciting male to play with and I fully enjoyed reading about their love play. I had heard some complaints that this book has a very YA feel to it but alls I can say is that I've never read a YA book that has this type of love play! Hot! Although I can see how someone could get irritated by Soosha's playful naivety. She was definitely not someone whose river ran deep but thats exactly what I love about these Familiars.

While I enjoyed Daxan and thought Soosha was a riot, the best part was revisiting Traed and following his own adventure while he attempts to bring Soosha's brother to heel. Brygar is someone I can't wait to continue on with and his story definitely has a few surprising turns. Just when I thought this 'extended novella' was nothing but a fluffy bit of fun fluff, Dara Joy definitely showed me how well she can craft a tale by the end of it. I can't wait to find out where she is going with this. Unfortunately she only employed said talent when she was attempting to 'hook' the reader into buying another book. (If you don't like cliffhangers you may end up screaming and calling for Dara Joy's blood by the end of this book) I'm not going to enter the whole Dara Joy squabble because I don't care that much and I'm not going to begrudge an author her livelihood. All I care about is that I fully enjoyed this book and can't wait to continue on when she finally releases her next full length Matrix of Destiny book.

BTW. It is a good thing the cover is not available to view here. The cover is one of the most atrocious covers I have ever, EVER seen. And I have seen some truly atrocious self published covers. *shudders*

The fourth book in Dara Joy's Matrix of Destiny series. Soosha is angry that the tunnel is closed and she is forbidden to leave M'yan. So she sneaks off the planet and ends up in Spoltam. Daxan Sahain finds her and brings her to his home to protect her. Meanwhile, her brother Brygar and Traed are sent to find her and bring her home.

It wasn't bad but I really didn't care for Soosha's careless behavior. I am saddened that the series wasn't finished because I really want to read Traed's story and see the end of the continuing storyline that was started. The next two books in the series are shorts and I really have no desire to read them.

So what happens to Traed, Brygar, Dariq, and Karpon? The summaries for Matrix #5 and #6 don't mention any of them. Are we to be left hanging?

The editing in this book left something to be desired. Misspelled or misused words: 1. Soosha / Soosha's; 2. wile / while; 3. Daxan / Daxan's; 4. woman / women; 5. accompanies / accompany; 6. Zysyz / Zysyz's; 7. Tread / Traed (and he's one of the main characters!); 8. non-Familiars / non-Familiar; 9. donned / dawned; 10. no where / nowhere; 11. bating / baiting; 12. safety / safety's; 13. viscous / vicious; 14. Grimmoire / Grimoire; 15. scrapped / scraped; 16. mores / more's.

There was also what I call a "small words" problem. Do, to, to, to, and a were missing from sentences, while I and of were added unnecessarily.

Not as good as the first three books. Based on the author's notes for the book, there were serious health issues for a loved one going on at the time of this book's release and perhaps that effected the writing. This story lacked some of the creativity I've come to associate with Ms. Joy. There was a nice twist at the end of the story and the side characters were a hoot. Will continue to read the series and am up for a reread of the first three.
The book also contains a second story about a woodcarver that is unrelated to the Matrix of Destiny series. It is about emotional healing and sex. Of course there is sex. Or maybe not. It's a sweet summer dream either way.

The book ended on an odd note. The “couple” of the book got together a bit too easily, but Traed’s quest to help the female Familiar’s brother was left incomplete. Personally, I cared more for Traed than the focus couple or the recalcitrant brother. No idea if either of the 2 remaining novellas move the story forward or not.

Read the original trilogy years ago, this is my first time reading this followup.

Not as good as the book before

I thought this book would be Traden's story, but it wasn't. The couple in the book were briefly dating then mated. It took no time at all, the other part of the story just ended without any more information. The book just ended. Therefore, I was disappointed with this novel. However, I am glad I read it because it provided more insight to the upcoming battle.

I didn't like this as well as the previous books. The writing wasn't like the older Joy books and the first story was choppy. The heroine was a little TSTL, but then she wouldn't have met her mate is she hadn't been. Her brother was annoying as well. The second story was OK, but the ending was open to interpretation, but I prefer the HEA.

Feline

my thoughts on this book is simply select. I have read more about these Familiars and wondered how a female would be. She was captivating and interesting however I have to say I would like a more adventurous female characters.

Тя е фамелиерка и бяга от вкъщи, за да се наслади на своето приключение. Среща своя мъж, мисли си, че го оженва за себе си без той да знае, докато не открива, че той също е фамелиер и я е изиграл.

Utterly mundane romance, slightly interesting scifi setting.
These were suggested to me as different from the average romance novel. If you were to ask me why I read 4 of these, it's because I kept hoping for more of the non-romance stuff. I was disappointed.
