What an enjoyable book. Simple language, great prose, and it gives you a general understanding of the important theories of development in the history of psychology. It also gives context when you need it to understand something, as well as a brief biography of the theorist which helps you imagine what kind of life experience he went through to make such a theory.

This book was referenced in a class I took last semester about diagnosing children and adolescents. The class focused a lot on attachment theory and Perry's work on neuropsychological effects of poor attachment. This book is very approachable/readable for a textbook and covers in enough detail to not get boring many of the developmental theories. I was familiar with most, but there were a few that I had not spent much time on before and a couple that I had not even heard of prior to reading this. Each chapter was 30 mins to an hour of reading; nothing overwhelming, but a nice summary and general reference for the future. The chapters cover: Performationism, Locke, Rousseau, Gesell, Darwin, Lorenz, Tinbergent, Bowlby, Ainsworth, Montessori, Werner, Piaget, Kohlberg, Pavlov, Watson, Skinner, Bandura, Vygotsky, Freud, Erickson, mahler, Bettleheim, Schachtel, Chomsky, and Jung.

This has been the go-to book for development theory for quite a while. This text was assigned to me in an adolescent psych class for my undergrad, an intro to human development course for my masters, and now for an advanced human development class in my Ph.D. program.
It does an excellent job of providing a quick introduction to many different development theorists and their theories throughout several different fields. The writing is straight forward and the book gives references for further inquiry.

I dropped out of college after a traumatic personal incident in late 2017 and, while I wanted to go back, I was embarrassed and concerned that my mental health issues would prevent me from succeeding. I started reading this book earlier this year, however, and it almost singlehandedly inspired me to finally go back, this time pursuing a degree in psychology. It's been rough so far, I was right to be concerned about my mental health, but I also think it's worth it. I can't imagine William Crain wrote this book to change people's lives, but it's changing mine right now, so... thank you :)

A Map of Contradictory Territories
William Crain’s Theories of Development is a standard text in its field for good reason. It is exceptionally well-organized and clearly written, providing concise and accessible summaries of a vast range of thinkers from Locke to Vygotsky, Rousseau to Skinner. As a descriptive catalog of the major attempts to explain human growth, the book is an invaluable resource for any student. Its primary virtue—its breadth—is, however, inextricably linked to its most profound weakness: a quiet refusal to critically interrogate the foundational, and often mutually exclusive, assumptions upon which these theories are built.
The book operates as a tour through a gallery of portraits of the human person, yet it presents each portrait with a kind of detached neutrality, as if the choice between them were a matter of aesthetic preference rather than one of momentous consequence. A significant portion of the text, for example, is dedicated to the romantic tradition of Rousseau, Gesell, and Montessori. Crain presents their view of the child as an innately good being who unfolds according to an internal plan, with society acting as the primary corrupting agent. This is a seductive and persistent notion, but one that fails to grapple with the universal human experience of internal conflict—the struggle between our better and worse inclinations. By externalizing the source of all dysfunction, it offers an impoverished model of moral development and absolves the individual of the difficult, essential work of cultivating virtue.
Juxtaposed with this romanticism are the mechanistic theories of the behaviorists. Here, the human person is not a blossoming flower but a complex machine, a blank slate to be programmed by external stimuli. Crain dutifully explains the mechanics of operant conditioning, but the text lacks a rigorous challenge to the radical materialism at its core. In this view, free will, conscience, and the search for transcendent meaning are rendered illusory. Man is reduced to a bundle of appetites to be managed, a conception that is not only philosophically thin but also strips the human person of any inherent dignity beyond that of a well-functioning apparatus. The book presents this view alongside the Rousseauian one without ever forcing a confrontation between their fundamentally incompatible claims about human nature.
Where the book finds firmer ground is in its treatment of theorists who, in their own way, acknowledge a larger context for human development. Vygotsky’s work on the role of culture and social interaction, for instance, provides a necessary corrective to models that view the child in isolation. It rightly intuits that a person is formed through participation in a shared inheritance of language, tradition, and community. Similarly, Erikson’s psychosocial stages, with their focus on the resolution of existential crises and the search for fidelity and wisdom, at least gesture toward a life that has purpose and a developmental arc that is teleological, not merely procedural.
Ultimately, Crain has provided an excellent map of the disparate territories of developmental theory. He shows us where each country is and describes its basic features. What he does not provide is a compass. The text implicitly sanctions a form of intellectual relativism, leaving the student with a collection of powerful, often dangerous, ideas but without the philosophical tools to properly evaluate them. It is a useful book for learning what the major theorists thought, but one must look elsewhere to acquire the wisdom to discern whether they were right.

July 5, 2007It's fairly concise - little bit of background on each theorist and a fairly broad but accurate overview of the theories involved. Not too technical.

Used in my Lifespan Human Learning and Development class. I thought this book was good. An effective resource for learning about theories of development.

This is an excellent choice for courses on child development. This book has a chapter on each major developmental and other major psychologists and major theories. He gives a bit of biographical background, summarizes the major aspects of the theory or theories, looks at how they have been critiqued by others, and offers his own critique. He also explores briefly the practical and educational implications of each theory. His bias is strongly developmental, and in particular he is most aligned with the Piagetian viewpoint. He does not refrain from offering his point of view, though his is also careful to give a fairly balanced "objective" account of each, and acknowledge what they have offered to the field. He ends with a chapter against the standardized testing movement in education, which is addition to this edition. I enjoyed reading it, and found that it makes the content very accessible to my teacher education students.

Nice, easy introduction to the major perspectives that dominate developmental psychology, especially as someone who knew very little about this field going in. I funnily found the Piagetian/developmentalist tradition the least compelling of the perspectives offered in this book despite the author’s pretty clear developmentalist bias.

I mean…. I read it for school. Was it informative? Sure. But I felt like the language was very complicated, even for a grad school textbook. Not bad though, the chapters could’ve definitely been dragged on for longer.

I consider this more of a survey of the many different theories of development. Great resource to have for a psyche major.

This book contains a fairly concise overview of many different theories of psychological development.
For most theorists, Crain includes a brief biography, the basics of the theory, discussions of application, and then an evaluation.
The biographies are useful for historical perspective. I found the application section to be the most helpful as the applications generally were from an educational perspective.
Topics covered: (paraphrased from Table of Contents)
Preformationism
Locke's Environmentalism
Rousseau's Romantic Naturalism
Gesell's Maturational Theory
Ethological Theories of Darwin, Lorenz, and Tinbergen
Montessori's Educational Philosophy
Werner's Organismic and Comparative Theory
Piaget's Cognitive-Developmental Theory
Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development
Learning Theory (Pavlov, Watson, Skinner)
Bandura's Social Learning Theory
Vygotsky's Social-Historical Theory of Cognitive Development
Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory
Erikson and the Eight Stages of Life
Bettelheim's treatment of autism
Schachtel on Childhood Experiences
Jung's Theory of Adulthood
Chomsky's Theory of Language Development
Humanistic Psychology
It always amazes me how much background material is necessary in any field. I feel that this book barely touches the surface, and yet over 22 prominent scholars are presented. Each had a lifetime of work, some still currently relevant and some better left to obscurity.
I read the third edition of this book as it is the one I own. From various internet resources, I understand that the fourth and fifth editions include more updated information, including the author's developmental perspective on the standards movement.
I found this online interview of Dr. Crain. It's long, but so far interesting.

Read the Sixth Edition for Human Development in grad school. I like the subject. I dislike this textbook.
The author allows his biases to show throughout the text. There are numerous times where girls and women are described as pretty or beautiful or sensitive--for no apparent reason. It certainly didn't affect the text nor did it offer any relevance. The boys and men were not given defining descriptors of "pretty."
The section on John Locke was difficult to read because the presentation Crain provided was somewhat faulty from the beginning. He refers to Locke talking about the environment as the main effect on child development, when the quote he literally shares from Locke actually states "experience". Certainly environment can be part of experience, but, it is not the whole of it. Instead, it comes across as a specific choice, in part due to the author's clear preference for Rousseau.
What bothers me the most, however, is the way Crain approaches and describes autism spectrum disorder. He refers to autism as a "severe personality disorder." He also passes echolalia off as "simply echoing what others say." He very broadly sweeps across all "children with autism" (his phrasing), declaring that they are "rebuffing human interaction." He also categorizes stimming as a "disturbance."
There are other human development textbooks out there: ones that take a more neutral and objective approach, don't use objectifying and unnecessary descriptors for women and girls, and that don't come across like a propaganda machine for Autisim Speaks.

This is a survey book of several theories of development spanning from Locke and Rousseau to Freud, Jung and Maslow. For what it's worth, it was interesting to see how different theories developed and how they differ. I felt it was very good of the author not to really rank any of them, but allow the reader to evaluate them based on the evidence for each theory.
I was surprised to learn more about psychologists like Freud and Jung than I have learned in my other classes though.
Glad to have this book behind me, however.
