Growing American Roots: Why Our Nation Will Thrive as Our Largest Minority Flourishes

Rate this book
From the highest-ranking Hispanic in congressional history comes an inspiring vision for our country's future.

For Senator Bob Menendez, it's about time the truth about Hispanics and their potential in this nation is brought into the spotlight. Instead of viewing Latinos as the cause of many of America's problems, he sees quite the opposite-and in this book he takes a unique approach by imagining a hopeful future for our nation. With the step-by-step plan that Menendez has devised, the United States' future will be made brighter and more successful precisely because of, not in spite of, the burgeoning influence of the Hispanic population as it "grows its American roots."

Senator Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, has a lot say and says it well. His excellent points, however, are commonly made with a simultaneous slam on the Republican party, President G.W. Bush in particular.

I would have enjoyed his book much more if it weren't frequently necessary to suppress the gag reflex whenever he painted the Democrats as the guys wearing the white hats and the Republicans as the bad guys wearing the black hats. So far as I can tell, neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are the heroes who have saved the day for all Americans.

On the positive side, Senator Menendez did a good job illustrating the active role the Hispanics have played in the unfolding of the American drama. I, too, am proud of the Hispanics and their many contributions to American exceptionalism.
